Mount Hebron's ardent home-court cheering section tried to rattle Centennial's Will Latta by making fun of his haircut every time he went to the foul line in the fourth quarter. They chanted, "Chia Pet."But Latta ignored the insult and sank five of six free throws down the stretch to spark the streaking Eagles to a 55-49 upset of No. 13 Mount Hebron (12-2, 4-2) last night.Latta (10 points), a senior substitute swing man who played almost two full quarters because Centennial starters Dave Hudson and Kurt Weitzel got into early foul trouble, hit two crucial free throws with 55 seconds left to gave the Eagles a 49-48 lead.

Despite 19th-ranked Howard's 54-37 loss last night in its county opener to perennial powerhouse and sixth-ranked Mount Hebron (4-4, 1-0), Lions coach Craig O'Connell stood at Mount Hebron's midcourt smiling at the end of the game.Mount Hebron's swarming man-to-man defense had overwhelmed Howard (4-5, 0-1) in the first half, creating 10 first-quarter turnovers, as the Lions fell behind at halftime, 29-12.But after the Vikings' lead climbed to 48-23 on senior shooting guard Emily Yanero's three-pointer early in the fourth quarter, Howard's young players produced a 14-6 run to close the game and bring a long-awaited grin to O'Connell's face.

Success has come often to Mount Hebron girls basketball coach Dave Greenberg. But success has not always come easy.Take this year's Vikings. Sure, they were blessed with three of the Baltimore area's better players in Kris Bryant, Erica McCauley and Emily Yanero. But that doesn't fully explain how Hebron achieved a 21-1 regular season record, won its 12th county championship in 14 seasons under Greenberg or held The Baltimore Sun's No. 1 metropolitan area ranking for nearlythree months. The Vikings won night after night, despite noticeable shortcomings.

Mount Hebron and Hammond probably are headed for next week's Class 2A, Region II volleyball playoffs, although neither team played that way last night. In an exercise dominated by defensive lapses, sloppy service and the kinds of mental mistakes that drive coaches crazy, Mount Hebron rebounded from a poor start to win three straight games and take a 7-15, 15-8, 15-13, 15-10 victory at Hammond. The victory pulled the Vikings (9-5, 8-5) into a third-place tie with Hammond (9-5, 8-5) in the county standings.
