Your recent editorial on Howard County's ban on sugary beverages hit the mark ("A culture of healthy choices," Dec/ 13). On behalf of the American Academy of Pediatrics Maryland Chapter and our nearly 900 members statewide, I want to support Howard County Executive Ken Ulman for setting strong nutritional standards for the beverages sold on county property. Consumption of sugary drinks has been linked to obesity and the chronic diseases that are killing most Marylanders. Because of Mr. Ulman's actions, food and drinks served to young people by county departments in after-school programs, recreation and parks programs, and in county parks and libraries will now be more healthy.

As the morning of our third-week pickup dawned, I pulled the Post-it notes off our refrigerator: We had done it. We'd successfully eaten everything from Week 2, except half a head of broccoli. On to Week 3! This week's share included turnips, beets, radishes, onions, carrots, lettuce, raspberries - and more broccoli. A huge, giant, enormous head of broccoli. Clearly, I needed a broccoli dish to take advantage of this bounty. I settled down with a stack of cookbooks and the pint of fresh raspberries, snacking as I rejected recipe after recipe.

After several months of angling for the promotional marketing account of ConAgra's popular Healthy Choice line of frozen foods, W. B. Doner & Co. said yesterday that it has landed the $6 million piece of business.Doner's programs for Healthy Choice will be aimed at increasing the shelf space that supermarkets give to the low-salt, low-cholesterol frozen dinners, heightening consumer interest through buying incentives and possibly expanding the product line, said Jim Dale, the agency's president.

Thanks for the recent article highlighting two businesses that are working to provide healthier food choices in Baltimore ("Two city stores move to close health gap," June 18). I work in the office complex next to Apples & Oranges, one of the highlighted businesses, and have the luxury of being able to purchase lunch once or twice a week when I am at the office. Until the opening of Apples & Oranges, there weren't great options in the area, only McDonald's, Wendy's and Subway.

Mortician Erich March told me he was tired of seeing people in his East Baltimore community die of conditions like diabetes and hypertension. He blamed the lack of grocery shopping choices in the neighborhood where he grew up and where his Aisquith Street funeral home is located. He and his wife, Michele Speaks-March, were determined to bring a new style of shopping to the Oliver, South Clifton and Darley Park neighborhoods. They were not targeting the vegan or food faddist crowd.

Ellen Valentino and the beverage Industry are entitled to their own opinions but not their own facts ("Ulman drink ban is heavy-handed," Dec. 18). Ms. Valentino's assertion that the beverage industry has "voluntarily removed full-calorie soft drinks from schools in Howard County" is simply not true. Walk into many county middle schools and high schools and you will see rows of vending machines offering an assortment of full calorie drinks. Some school vending machines even sell 20-ounce full-calorie drinks.

Taylor DesRosiers was a competitive swimmer throughout her life, always fit. But in her first year of medical school, she realized that had changed — she was at an unhealthy weight. The rigors of her education had piled on top of two rough years in which she went through a broken-off engagement and supporting her mother through a health scare. During a course on obesity, she realized, according to body mass index charts, she was technically obese herself. "It just kind of hit me: I need to make a large change," DesRosiers said.

For the first time in history, Maryland's governor has decided he wants to be represented by a potato.Chick and Ruth's Delly, the 30-year-old Annapolis institution where politics regularly mix with pastrami, will add No. 11, the "Parris N. Glendening (Healthy Choice) Baked Potato" with broccoli and cheese, to its menu Monday.Owner Ted Levitt said the potato is a first for the deli, which has long named its specialty sandwiches after politicians. Mr. Glendening was offered the opportunity to have his name attached to any sandwich but chose the potato instead.

In an editorial, you ask whether the federal dietary guidelines have to be so complicated ( "More advice on what to eat," Feb. 6). You answered your own question through the examples you cite — yes they do. Take sodium: Your advice to "cook more meals at home" won't reduce sodium intake to 1,500 mg when cooking to many people means heating up carry-out, prepared foods and convenient "just add the main ingredient" mixes at home. The National Salt Reduction Initiative, a partnership of cities, companies and national health organizations such as the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors, has targets to guide salt reduction in packaged food and restaurant food for committed companies such as Snyder's of Hanover and Au Bon Pain.
