CLEVELAND -- With roughly a week left before Tuesday's 4 p.m. trade deadline, the Orioles are continuing to search for improvements. And it is becoming increasingly clear that adding a corner infield bat with the ability to get on base at a high clip is a major priority - perhaps neck-and-neck with acquiring a starting pitcher. In the past few weeks, the Orioles have had contact with the San Diego Padres about third baseman Chase Headley, the Philadelphia Phillies about third baseman Placido Polanco and the Chicago Cubs about first baseman Bryan LaHair, among others, according to several industry sources.

"It's time for me to make a change. I've been coaching for a long time. I may move from the area. In fact, I'm thinking seriously about that. My mother is 80 and lives in Princes Anne, in Summerset County, about three hours from here. I'm thinking about moving there and reconnecting with some of my family.

Bruce Headley has trained horses for 42 years. He has never run one in Maryland. That will change tomorrow when Headley, a 67-year-old horseman from California, saddles Kona Gold for the Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash at Laurel Park. Headley not only seldom races outside California, but he also never overtaxes Kona Gold, star of his stable and champion sprinter of 2000. So why has Headley done something so out of character and entered Kona Gold in the De Francis Dash? "He's feeling so good," Headley said of his 7-year-old sprinter.

This time around, Heather Headley wasn't afraid to say, "You know, I'm not feeling this. Let's change it." While recording her sophomore album In My Mind, the follow-up to her gold-selling 2002 debut, This Is Who I Am, the pop-R&B singer made sure the material reflected her more. The solid, 12-cut CD hits stores Jan. 31. "I really wanted to be more involved," says Headley, who's calling from a promotional stop in New York City. "I needed my hands in there. ... I felt like I could fight a little more about what songs I really wanted.

We established loyalties during the childhood Saturdays spent at the neighborhood and downtown movie houses. My own allegiances went to the Waverly, Boulevard, Parkway and Aurora, all still standing, but all out of the motion picture business. I miss them all and the sense they imparted of a neighborhood coming out for a good time. I am indebted to author Robert K. Headley, who in his comprehensive tribute to Baltimore's theaters, Motion Picture Exhibition in Baltimore, An Illustrated History and Directory of Theaters, 1895-2004, takes us from the Alpha (Catonsville)
