The Orioles acquired a big-time character guy when they traded two prospects for 41-year-old slugger and proven winner Jim Thome. Let's hope it's not too late. The O's are still a few games above .500 and entered Tuesday night's game among the top five teams in the American League, but they are looking less and less like a wild-card team and more and more like a group of frustrated, inconsistent guys who have an excellent chance to arrive at the All-Star break in fourth place.

After reading the statement by Maryland State Highway Administrator Melinda Peters that construction speed cameras need to be operating even when workers are not present, I believe she needs another title: professional liar ("SHA defends speed camera program," Jan. 16). I wish we were back in the early 1800s because she would be ridden out of town after being tarred and feathered. Now that we are in civilized 2013, I guess the best thing to do with her is to fire her immediately.

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The cracking sound of a mid-90s fastball hitting the head of Orioles left fielder Nolan Reimold on Friday set off a collective gasp throughout the seating bowl of Charlotte Sports Park. The Orioles had their first serious injury scare of spring training as Reimold took a pitch off the left side of his jaw in the first inning of the Orioles' 3-3, 10-inning tie with the Tampa Bay Rays. The 2-1 delivery from Rays right-hander Alex Cobb sent Reimold to the ground holding the side of his face.
