This NFL offseason represents the 10-year anniversary of the inception of the "Rooney Rule. " The rule, named after Pittsburgh Steelers' Chairman Dan Rooney, requires teams to interview minority candidates for all head coaching and senior football operation positions. Initially, the rule showed some signs of success, but the coaching moves from this offseason have even Dan Rooney's son, Steelers' President Art Rooney II, wondering "whether we are really reviewing minority coaches in a satisfactory manner.

College basketball Loyola alumnus Wojcik hired to first head coaching job by San Jose State Loyola College graduate Dave Wojcik was named head coach at San Jose State. Wojcik spent the past three seasons as the associate head coach at Boise State, which received an at-large bid to this year's NCAA tournament and recorded the second 20-win season in three years and the fourth-most wins during the regular season in school history. Wojcik, who had the only triple double in Loyola history in 1989, returned to his alma mater in 1993 as an assistant and helped coach the Greyhounds to the team's first NCAA tournament appearance and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title in 1994.

The reality of the Ravens' salary cap situation and post Super Bowl XLVII world hit coach John Harbaugh early last week. With the Ravens failing to convince wide receiver Anquan Boldin to take a pay cut and not willing to carry his $6 million salary cap hit, Harbaugh knew exactly who to call. “Heck yes,” his brother, Jim, the coach of San Francisco 49ers, said when asked if he was interested in acquiring Boldin, a player that they struggled to stop a month earlier in the Super Bowl.

Men's track and field Douglass alum Wiley to coach Team USA at Junior Pan Am Games Baltimore native Cliff Wiley has been named the head men's coach for Team USA at the 2013 Junior Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, USA Track & Field announced Friday. This is the Douglass alumnus' first appointment as a head coach after serving USA Track & Field teams as the head manager of the 2004 IAAF World Junior Championships. Wiley, currently the head girls track and field coach at Washington High School in Kansas City, Kan., will lead a squad of approximately 40 16- to 19-year-olds.

Archbishop Curley senior Patrick Koscher recently signed his National Letter of Intent to attend and play soccer at Georgetown University in the fall. The Hoyas finished #2 in the country last fall. Koscher, who resides in Bel Air, will be graduating this spring from Curley High School with a GPA of 4.1. He is a volunteer at St. Francis de Sales in Abingdon and helps in the community for groups such as Habitant for Humanity. Ravens head coach John Harbaugh is back into the routine at the Castle. He is turning down speaking engagements and book deals and watching video of potential draft picks. The euphoria of being a winning Super Bowl head coach is finally starting to die down. "I'm getting into the routines again," said Harbaugh, about to enter his sixth season in Baltimore. "I'm watching every guy in the draft. I've got to do that, I've got to know who we're drafting and if I can help. "I get a report every night from our coordinators on what they did and it gives me a chance to weigh in as well.

When top-ranked Loyola and No. 3 Maryland meet Saturday at Ridley Athletic Complex in Baltimore in what is being billed as a rematch of last year's national title game, one interested observer who won't be actively involved in the proceedings is Kevin Warne. Warne was the defensive coordinator responsible for aiding the Terps' back-to-back appearances in NCAA tournament finals, but on August 14, he agreed to succeed Dave Urick as the head coach at Georgetown.
