City school officials offered few answers to Hazelwood Elementary/Middle parents during a contentious meeting Thursday about an employee accused of impregnating a 15-year-old and misrepresenting himself as a child therapist. Separately, the city school board chairman said in an interview that members would scrutinize the system's process for verifying potential employees' credentials. The incident marks the third time under city schools CEO Andrés Alonso's administration that employees have apparently misrepresented their credentials.

BOWIE -- The Hazelwood mansion is different things to different people -- a Revolutionary War hero's home to some, a keyhole into the life of ordinary folks to others, a monument of three historic periods to architects. What it's not is the majestic farmhouse that once presided over the bustling Patuxent River port of Queen Anne's, south of what is now Bowie in Prince George's County.Hazelwood is a dilapidated symbol of that house. Its faded, whitewashed exterior and boarded-up windows -- with imitation panes painted on -- give it the look of a ghost house.

When classes resumed this month at Hazelwood Elementary-Middle School, Ashley Moore was not among her second-grade classmates, but she was not forgotten. She is confined to home, undergoing physical therapy for scarring over the length of her body, the constant reminder of a school accident caused by a malfunctioning water heater in June.Over at Hazelwood, educators cannot erase the memory of her screams from their hearts.Discomfited, too, are officials at school headquarters, who did not send help immediately when Hazelwood employees called during the emergency.

WITH ABOUT 40 communities having requested speed humps from the city Department of Public Works this year, you'd think the things would be universally popular. But not near Hazelwood Avenue in Northeast Baltimore, where a series of humps installed in the 4500 block in late May has left some neighbors jolting mad."Humps are for camels," said Bill Brigerman, a resident of nearby Seymour Avenue. "Whose bright idea was it to install them in the first place? Sounds like something that would come from the Harper Valley PTA in cooperation with DPW. Luckily, I'm not an egg salesman."

A lack of evidence led a Baltimore jury to rule that two principals were not negligent in a $1.3 million bullying lawsuit against the city school system, but jurors said they were also conscious of a snowball effect that could subject systems around the country to a barrage of lawsuits. "This weighed heavy on us because we realized what we did would affect systems nationwide," said Carl Armstrong, who served as Juror No. 6 in the four-day trial. "We took that heavily into consideration, because we knew we could open the possibility of lawsuits — from past, present and future parents of students — against schools across the country, and Baltimore City would have been at the forefront.
