James Loeffler will present "What's in a Name? The Prime Minister, the Professor, and the Debate Over Israel's Name," a talk based on an exchange of letters between David Ben-Gurion and Professor Simon Rawidowicz on the naming of the Jewish state after its founding in 1948. The Oakland Mills Community Association will sponsor "Back by Popular Demand: An Evening of Jazz With the Lavenia Nesmith Quintet," featuring Lavenia Nesmith, an Oakland Mills resident and jazz singer. The group will perform from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 12 at The Other Barn in Oakland Mills Village Center, 5851 Robert Oliver Place. Lavenia Nesmith, who has performed at the Kennedy Center, Blues Alley, the Henley Park Hotel in Washington and as backup vocalist for Diana Ross, will be accompanied by pianist Chris Grasso, drummer Lenny Robinson, saxophonist Paul Carr, and Wes Biles on bass.
