On may 12, 2005, GENE G. HASTINGS, 94, passed away peacefully at her home in Rehoboth Beach, DE. after a short illness. Retired Educator & Florist Shop Owner Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE, where the family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 17, from 10-11 A.M. with a funeral service immediately following. Interment will be at Lewes Presbyterian Cemetery in Lewes, DE. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the SPCA, 326 South Du Pont Highway, Georgetown, DE, 19947.

While the lawyer for one Baltimore police officer warned of her client being judged too quickly after allegations surfaced that he helped cover-up a child's killing when the rifle was found in his car, another officer apologized for his own misdeeds in a kickback case. In the middle was Baltimore's embattled police commissioner, Frederick H. Bealefeld III, who came out swinging against bad cops and a perception that his department is full of them. It was a day full of dueling quotes.

A Florida man repeated Sunday as champion of the U.S. National Oyster Shucking Contest held in St. Mary's County. The 2010 champion, Michael Martin, of Panama City Beach, won again, based on how quickly and completely he shucked 24 oysters, according to Beverly Brown, administrator of the St. Mary's County Oyster Festival. George Hastings of Nick's Inner Harbor Seafood at Baltimore's Cross Street Market finished in third place, Brown said. The victory qualifies Martin to compete in the world championships at the Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival in Ireland next fall.

On Tuesday, October 4, 2005, WILLIAM JAMES HASTINGS, 85, of Pine Knoll Shores, NC, died at Harborview Health Care Center, Morehead City, NC. He is survived by daughters Linda Hastings Quillen, of Spring Grove, PA, and Nancy Hastings Doremus, of Morehead City, NC; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The Baltimore Sun Media Group, publisher of The Baltimore Sun, announced the appointment Tuesday of Joseph D. Brenneman to head advertising sales. Brenneman, a marketing executive formerly with the Los Angeles Newspaper Group, will take over as senior vice president of sales, replacing Linda Hastings, who will retire this month. Brenneman had served as senior vice president of sales and marketing for the Los Angeles-based network of nine daily newspapers and multiple websites, weeklies and magazines owned by MediaNews Group.

Hastings, the injured harbor seal rescued in Ocean City in January, returned to the Atlantic waters this morning after months of rehabilitation. The seal was tagged with a satellite transmitter before his release on the beach in the Ocean City inlet in front of a crowd of onlookers. The transmitter will allow scientists to track him and learn more about migration and feeding patterns. When Hastings was released, Aquarium spokesperson Jen Bloomer said, "He looked around a bit … then he spotted the water and headed toward it. His head was up as he went through the waves.

Democracy does not cultivate a taste for deferred gratification: Politicians eyeing the next election want to give people what they want sooner rather than later. And in a time of economic turmoil, the impulse to do something immediately is even stronger. But the haste is misplaced. In the current climate of panic, policymakers need to learn patience - and they need to learn it right now. A couple of alleged crises are getting all the attention at the moment. The first is the risk of a recession.

Brad Hastings, from Hog Neck Golf Course in Easton, lost a 2-up lead in a three-hole stretch midway through the afternoon round, then rallied to take the 86th annual amateur championship of the Maryland State Golf Association yesterday with a 2-and-1 win over Richard Holland, a member of the host Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase. The match was even after 32 holes before Hastings won the 15th in the afternoon round with a 5-foot birdie putt. He then won the 16th with a difficult two-putt par from 20 feet followed by a Holland miss from 5 feet.

No one, as far as Paul Bartlett can tell, knew much about the guy. Even his name was unknown; but his routine, as observed by the regulars, was systematic. About three years ago, when the Hon Bar began giving away free oysters on the first Friday of the month, a short fellow would saunter in and proceed to devour the mollusks by the dozen. "I have no idea where he came from, but he was a short man," said Bartlett, as he shucked oysters on a recent Friday for customers at the Hampden bar. "He would start coming in around 7, take about a dozen, sit down, eat them.
