Coming early next month will be a chance for Harford County residents to get rid of certain hazardous household products that they may not have figured out how to get rid of safely. On Saturday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Local Emergency Planning Committee, in cooperation with Harford County Office of Recycling, is offering Harford County residents the opportunity to safely dispose of their household hazardous waste products, such as oil-based paints, cleaning products, bleach, pool chemicals, herbicides, pesticides and mercury thermometers.

For decades in Maryland many things have been done in the name of saving the Chesapeake Bay, but the degree to which tangible progress has been made is something of a disappointment. To be sure, there have been some successes. The mid-1980s ban on catching rockfish in an effort to allow the Chesapeake stock of the state fish to make a recovery has resulted in reasonably healthy stocks of the fish being available for watermen and sport anglers alike these days. Substantially stricter regulation of blue crab harvests seem to have helped avert a rockfish-like population collapse in Maryland's signature table fare.

The 19-year-old Harford County man with developmental disabilities who is accused of killing his 2-month-old niece was ordered Monday to continue being held without bail. Colin Christopher Wolf, of the 2000 block of Bay Meadows Court in Forest Hill, is facing first degree murder charges after he allegedly struck the child, who had been left in his care, in the face Thursday night and she later died, according to the Harford County Sheriff's Office. After an earlier bail review hearing Friday where Harford County District Court Judge Mimi Cooper questioned Wolf's competency, District Court Judge Victor Butanis ordered Wolf to continue being held without bail Monday and made no mention of any competency concerns.

Aberdeen Christina S. Harris, 22, of the 100 block of Edmund Street, was charged Friday with theft between $1,000 and $10,000 and scheming to commit theft between $1,000 and $10,000. Jennifer N. Herron, 40, of the 200 block of Garner Drive, was charged Friday with disorderly conduct and failing to obey a reasonable and lawful order. Jylbeth Lynch, 28, of the first block of Smith Avenue, was charged Saturday with three counts of theft less than $1,000 and scheming to commit theft between $1,000 and $10,000.

On Sunday, April 14, the Business Among Moms group hosted a vendor fair and silent auction to benefit Harford Family House, a homeless shelter for families with children. The event was held at El Rodeo Restaurant, which donated the space for the vendors and will add to the proceeds 15 percent of the food sales for that day. The event was organized by Sherri Werther, a hairdresser at Split Endz Salon at the Festival in Bel Air. Through sponsorships, the group raised more than $600 which will house a homeless mother, father or child at Harford Family House for 24 days at just $25 per day. The event featured everything from Sentsy Candles to handmade soaps and jewelry, all products sold by the members of the group who are direct retailers and owners of their own businesses.

Harford County Public Library rolled out the red carpet for teens and their families at the Abingdon Library in March at a special screening and awards ceremony for the teen Film This! Book Trailers contest. Throughout the winter months, teens created and submitted short videos showcasing a favorite book, similar to a movie trailer. At the premiere, the finalist videos were viewed and the winners announced. Peter Stauffer was awarded first place for his "Chasing the Falconers" book trailer.

Harford County Sheriff's deputies say they made a grisly discovery early Sunday morning after receiving a call at 9:30 a.m. asking them to check on the well-being of an Edgewood resident. Deputies arriving at the house in the 1700 block of Fountain Rock Way, found the home locked but could hear a TV playing inside, according to Harford County Sheriff's Office spokesman Edward Hopkins. No one came to the door, and as they continued their search, deputies observed blood and a body on the floor, officials said.

Harford County sheriff's deputies chased a suspect who fled an armed robbery at a liquor store in the Bel Air area on Friday afternoon and later crashed his vehicle on Route 40 in the Joppa area. The suspect, since identified only as a black male, rolled over a white SUV several times after clipping another vehicle turning at Route 40 and Pine Avenue, Eddie Hopkins, a spokesperson for the Harford County Sheriff's Office said. Hopkins said shortly after 4 p.m. that details about the crime and the ensuing chase are still being gathered.

Bundle up if you have early morning activities planned Sunday. The National Weather service has issued a freeze warning from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday for Frederick, Carroll, Harford, Northern Baltlimore County and Howard. The areas, including Columbia and Westminster, could see temperatures in the low 30s, which has the potential to damage sensitive plants and crops.

Lawyers for a Harford County teen accused of killing his father last year attempted to convince a judge Friday that it would be unconstitutional to try the 17-year-old as an adult. Robert C. Richardson III's attorneys also said the boy is suffering from the effects of isolation at the county jail, asking at a motions hearing for their client to be transferred to a facility for juveniles. They said he is being held in solitary confinement at the Harford County Detention Center. "The jail in Harford County does not have the capability to address the needs of juvenile offenders and juvenile inmates," lawyer Kay Beehler said at a hearing Friday in Harford County Circuit Court.
