She's been on stage with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Minnesota Orchestra and the London Symphony, but this Sunday, cellist Sharon Robinson will perform a free concert at Har Sinai Congregation in Northwest Baltimore. The cellist, who has accompanied such artists as Rudolf Serkin, Isaac Stern and Yo-Yo Ma, will perform, among other works, Rachmaninoff's Sonata in G minor, Debussy's "Sonata 1915," as well as "With Love," an award-winning composition by Baltimorean Vivian Adelberg Rudow.

Har Sinai Congregation names Pa. woman cantorHar Sinai Congregation, the nation's oldest continuous Reform congregation, has appointed Nancy R. Ginsberg as its cantor.Ginsberg, a 1987 graduate of the Hebrew Union College School of Sacred Music, comes to Baltimore from Temple Sinai in Summit, N.J., where she has served as cantor and music director since 1995. She was previously cantor and music director for seven years at the Main Line Reform Temple in Wynnewood, Pa.Ginsberg succeeds Cantor Rhoda Silverman, who is taking time off from congregational work while she raises her family.

Har Sinai congregation may begin cleaning up a former dump site in the Worthington Valley where it wants to build a synagogue and a school, but it can't start construction until after a court hearing, a Baltimore County Circuit Court judge ruled yesterday. "A cleanup of the site, as long as it's done within the regulations, is in everyone's best interest," said Judge Laurence R. Daniels. Representatives of the congregation and the community expressed satisfaction with ruling.

Those who predict, even half-seriously, that great synagogues will someday rise up in Carroll County should not be too surprised by the planned move of the Har Sinai Congregation from Baltimore's Upper Park Heights section to a northwest Baltimore County site still to be selected.Members of Har Sinai, the oldest Reform congregation in the United States, have voted overwhelmingly to sell its property to a local Orthodox school for $4 million. The proceeds will be used to build a new Har Sinai temple in the Owings Mills-Reisterstown area, where the majority of the congregants have moved in recent years.
