Baltimore native Steven L. Jones, whose brief tenure as police chief of a small town in North Dakota was marred by allegations of aggressive policing and racism, has been fired. Larimore Mayor Marvin Denault gave Jones his walking papers Friday, saying he brought too much "negativity" to the town, according to Jones. Denault could not be reached for comment. "I am very much disappointed," Jones said from his home in Govans yesterday. "I've been working 40 years and never been terminated.

New England dodges upset FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The Patriots know how to finish games. The Lions just finish themselves off. Corey Dillon scored two of his three touchdowns in the last 8:35, Detroit turned the ball over on its last three possessions and New England avoided a stunning upset with a 28-21 victory. Dillon gave the Patriots (9-3) their first lead of the second half with his 4-yard scoring run with 2:33 left. "Any time there's time left on the clock, we think we can [win]," quarterback Tom Brady said.

Bush's failures push liberals into outrage It's hard to know where to begin a critique of Victor Davis Hanson's column "Liberals gone wild" (Opinion * Commentary, Oct. 20) Is it where he criticizes Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton for exercising their constitutional right to free speech to, in Mr. Hanson's words, "harp about the sins of the current administration"? Or it could be his accusation that the liberal media have been driven by their frustration of Mr. Bush to "clinical madness," or where he lists Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a soldier who lost his life in a misbegotten war, among the "feral Democrats."

DETROIT -- Roy Williams and Kevin Jones ended Rod Marinelli's long wait for a win. Williams had 10 receptions for 161 yards - both career highs - and scored a touchdown while Jones ran for a season-high 127 yards and a touchdown to lead the Detroit Lions to a 20-17 win over the Buffalo Bills yesterday. "I'm glad we got this because the coaching staff has really been under the microscope and they don't deserve that," Jones said. Instead of the late mistakes that have cost the Lions (1-5)

An Edgewood man was seriously injured late Monday when he tried to stop a carjacker from stealing his car with his 5-year-old son inside, the Harford County Sheriff's Office said. A soldier from Aberdeen Proving Ground has been charged in the case. Thomas Maurice Head, 30, was listed in serious condition yesterday at Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, a hospital spokeswoman said. His right leg was nearly amputated after he grabbed onto the side of his 2004 Ford Explorer as the carjacker drove it away, a spokesman for the sheriff's office said.

For good reason, Beverly Hanson has plenty of memories from the first LPGA Championship. It doesn't matter to Hanson that the tournament was played in 1955. "I never forget the ones I won," said Hanson, now 81. Speaking by telephone from her home in La Quinta, Calif., where she moved a few months after receiving a $1,200 winner's check that represented one of the biggest paydays of her 10-year career, Hanson can recall the week in Fort Wayne, Ind., for more than what she did on the course at Orchard Ridge Country Club.
