Units were canceled after only two minutes.Hampstead responded to an auto fire in the 1400 block of N. Main St. at 10:17 p.m. Saturday. Units were out for 12 minutes.* Lineboro: Lineboro responded to a brush fire on Siskel Road at 6:57 p.m. Friday. Units were out for one hour.

FirePleasant Valley: Firefighters from Westminster and Littlestown, Pa., assisted Pleasant Valley at 10: 49 a.m. Wednesday on a building fire at Route 97 and Old Hanover Road. Units were out 40 minutes.Westminster: An employee of Bishop Garth Apartments in the first block of Charles St. told police Tuesday that someone broke a fence railing at the complex. Damage was estimated at $500.Westminster: A resident of South Church Street told police Wednesday that personal items were stolen from her vehicle while it was parked near her home.

An air compressor was stolen.Ellicott City: 8300 block of U.S. 40: Someone broke into an office Saturday night and broke two windows, though nothing was taken. Later the same night, a rear garage door was pried open.Ellicott City: 5800 block of Main Street: A 1994 green, two-door Plymouth Duster, Maryland license plate 403-AWK, was stolen Friday.

Girl, 4, and man hurt in 2-car collision on U.S. 1A 4-year-old girl and a man were injured in a two-car collision on U.S. 1 in Elkridge Monday after a driver failed to yield the right of way, Howard County police said.The child, whose name was not provided by police, was treated at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Her condition was "not life-threatening," police said. Carlos Anthony Fonseca, 30, of Elkridge, who was driving the child, was not injured. Police did not say if the child and man are related.

Mussari, Carroll's longtime school personnel director and a former English teacher, dies on a tripto Florida, where he and his family had traveled to see Penn State play in the Blockbuster Bowl. The makeup of the current school system staff is the contribution of the 56-year-old Mussari, who was involved in recruiting, recommending and processing applications for the past 14 years.

A Lansdowne woman was killed and a passenger injured Wednesday night when a car lost control on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway near Hanover Road, according to Maryland State Police. Troopers responded at 8:33 p.m. to the scene of the collision. Frances Verleysen, 52, was driving southbound on the parkway when he lost control of his 1998 Toyota Camry, according to police. The sedan crossed the median and struck a Chevrolet Geo Metro traveling northbound. Stacey Mechell Altvater, 46, was pronounced dead at the scene, but a passenger in her vehicle was taken to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening, according to police.

Federal and Howard County traffic officials met in Elkridge yesterday to test the regraded railroad crossing where a MARC passenger train crashed into a tractor-trailer that became stuck last fall.Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board, CSX Corp. and the Howard County traffic department pulled another, similarly loaded tractor-trailer across the railroad tracks at Hanover Road near Elkridge.The road had been repaved and elevated to make it approximately the same height as the tracks.
