Anne Arundel County officials say a section of Race Road in Hanover will be closed for eight to 12 weeks for emergency repair, beginning Thursday morning at 10 a.m.. The county's Department of Public works will close the road between Hanover Road and Park Circle Drive, according to a press release. The area is near the Baltimore Washington Parkway and Route 100 near the Howard/Anne Arundel county line. The repair work is needed to stabilize a slope along Race Road that has been weakened by erosion from the nearby Deep Run stream and recent heavy storms, officials said.

More than 150 Elkridge residents packed a school meeting room last night, mainly to oppose the closing of Hanover Road at a railroad crossing west of the border of Howard and Anne Arundel counties - but not everyone agreed. The closing was intended to make the 18th-century community's twisting, bumpy main street safer, and several residents maintained that the goal must be reached, whatever the means. "I feel a need for it to be safer, and if closing it will make it safer, then we should do that," said Christine O'Connor, a Hanover Road resident and mother of three young children.

A proposed $150 million CSX train cargo transfer facility the state considers vital to Baltimore's port won't be built in Elkridge, according to Howard County Executive Ken Ulman, but Gov. Martin O'Malley is resisting calls from residents to remove the community from a list of four possible sites. "I've been very clear to CSX and Maryland Department of Transportation that I will only support a site if it has no impact on existing neighborhoods," Ulman said this week. "This [Elkridge]

A leafy relic of the rumble seat era and before, Hanover Road in Elkridge meanders southeast from U.S. 1 through residential neighborhoods, crossing railroad tracks and then Deep Run stream, where it moves into Anne Arundel County toward fast-growing Baltimore-Washington International Airport. Howard County officials and some community residents worried about safety want to close the road at the railroad crossing, a move others complain would cut off a convenient back door for Elkridge residents headed to Route 100, Arundel Mills mall or simply to Scott Haney's country store, and for Arundel residents coming west.

Howard County officials will gauge support for closing a section of Hanover Road that links Howard and Anne Arundel counties at a community meeting tomorrow night. Two years ago, officials delayed a study on that topic because a construction project was under way in the Harwood Park community, which would have affected traffic flow. That project, which involved a bridge on Loudon Avenue, is complete, along with other commercial and residential developments. Under these conditions, William F. Malone Jr., chief of Howard County's traffic division, wants to know whether support exists for the study.

A vote against widening road The proposal to add an interchange to Route 295 at Hanover Road in Anne Arundel County, and the accompanying proposal to widen 295 and a portion of Hanover Road, will do nothing more than further deplete the green space of a state watershed and invite office parks and congestion to grow in the last bastion of sustainable development along the loop around BWI Marshall Airport. The widening and development of Hanover Road will result in the displacement of residents, as well as the elimination of 36 acres of forest including "protected" land in the Patapsco Valley State Park.

Beef Shakes reminds me of one of those old-fashioned hamburger shacks that are so hard to find these days: the ones open only in the summer, and usually near beaches and lakes, where everyone walks up to the outdoor counter barefoot to order their lunch. The major differences: It has a more extensive menu and a less bucolic location, on bustling Old Hanover Road. Also, Beef Shakes is open year-round. Poor:]
