Jean O. Hannon, a longtime Howard County preservationist who played a major role in the revitalization of Ellicott City and the establishment of its historic district in the mid-1970s, died Oct. 27 at St. Agnes Hospital of complications from a fall at her home. She was 82. "I like things that are old," Mrs. Hannon told The Sun when she stepped down in 1994 after serving on Howard County's Historic District Commission for eight years. "If you don't know what's happened before, you don't know what's going to happen in the future."

Robert L. Hannon, a top business official in the Ehrlich administration, has been selected by Anne Arundel County Executive-elect John R. Leopold to run the county's economic development arm. Leopold's appointment Wednesday of Hannon, 60, as president and chief executive of the Anne Arundel Economic Development Corp. came a day after Aaron J. Greenfield, who has headed the quasi-governmental agency, was tapped to be chief of staff to Howard County Executive-elect Ken Ulman. An Annapolis resident, Hannon said he would run the agency on a full-time basis starting next month.

The state Department of Business and Economic Development has tapped a longtime Baltimore area development official to serve as its assistant secretary for regional development. Robert Hannon will be responsible for business development and retention throughout the state. He will also be in charge of strengthening the state's relationship with local jurisdictions. Hannon will oversee 55 employees who work in five regional offices and the department's Baltimore headquarters. DBED officials said Hannon, who was most recently executive director of the Baltimore County Department of Economic Development, brings a wide range of development experience to his new position.

On Tuesday, August, 26, 2003 AGNES RITA GUTHRIE, 93, of Mount Washington, MD, formerly of Ocean City, MD. Agnes was preceded in death by her husband, Carter M. Guthrie and daughter, Lorraine K. Hannon, both of Ocean City, MD. She is survived by her loving grandson Brian P. Hannon of Mount Washington with whom she resided. Also survived by seven additional grandchildren, Thomas F. Hannon Jr., Timothy M. Hannon, Kathryn H. Britt, Susan P. Hannon, Elizabeth A. Hannon, James Strigle, Jr. and Joyce A. Taylor; four great grandchildren, H. David Hannon, Alexandra G. Britt, Beau T. Britt and Lindsay Taylor; sister Rosalie M. Schilling, niece Rosalie M. Hurd, nephew Kenneth P. Schilling Jr. and great niece Lisa M. Hurd and son James H. Strigle.

Elaine Hannon Christy, who reinvented herself through a series of careers including construction, interior design and retailing at a time when few women worked, died Tuesday of heart failure at Manor Care Nursing Home in Towson. She was 81. Born in Catonsville to a strict Roman Catholic family, she exhibited early on what would be a lifelong streak of independence when, as a teen-ager, she changed her given name, Mary Theresa, to Elaine. Before long, she was selling cosmetics, modeling at Hecht United Brothers, and selling dresses at Frank's near Greenmount Avenue and 33rd Street.

A stolen credit card that was used to call an adult entertainment line in California helped state police crack about 25 cases of mail theft in the Hampstead area, authorities said.A 16-year-old boy from Hampstead was arrested Sunday on 45 counts of theft under $300, 41 counts of unlawful letter opening, DTC one count of credit card theft, four counts of credit card fraud and theft conspiracy involving two others -- a 17-year-old Hampstead boy and an 18-year-old Manchester man.The 16-year-old was not named and the two older suspects have not been charged, said Tfc. Chris Hannon of the state police barracks in Westminster.
