ANAHEIM, Calif. -- A sore right hamstring has done what few American League catchers have been able to do this season - slow Brian Roberts on the base paths. Roberts, who leads the American League with 19 steals in 22 attempts, doesn't have a stolen base in the past six games, but it's not because he hasn't been getting on base. He has had to be more cautious with a hamstring that started hurting about two weeks ago but only recently has led to his shutting down his running game to avoid a more serious injury.

Not wanting to risk a more serious injury to his left leg, the Orioles' Chris Richard didn't start last night's game against the Montreal Expos and could remain out of the lineup today if there's no improvement. Richard suffered a mild strain of his hamstring during Friday's 5-0 victory over the Expos. He was removed from right field after grounding out to end the fifth inning, with Brady Anderson shifting over from left and Delino DeShields coming off the bench. "I slipped trying to steal and felt something grab," he said.

NEW YORK - The hamstring felt good enough for Roger Clemens to dance off the mound in the seventh inning, his right hand clenched as if ready to deliver a staggering blow. That's what the Arizona Diamondbacks had been hoping to do. Clemens made sure the New York Yankees were standing last night because his right leg remained strong. He struck out nine over seven innings, outlasting Arizona's Brian Anderson, and the Yankees regained their footing in the World Series with a 2-1 victory in Game 3. Another loss would have put them a game away from being swept.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said he spent 20 minutes on the phone with injured second baseman Brian Roberts on Wednesday discussing all the possible paths he could take with his lingering right hamstring injury. At the end of the conversation, the decision was made that surgery to repair a ruptured semitendinosis muscle in his right hamstring was the best option moving forward. The recovery time from the procedure is roughly six weeks. And given the fact that Roberts has played in just 118 games since 2010 and just 20 since the beginning of the 2012 season, there will be lots of people saying that this might be the end of Roberts' career in an Orioles uniform.

Brian Roberts, who played in just 115 games the previous three seasons because of various injuries, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday, three games into 2013, with what the Orioles are calling a strained right hamstring. The second baseman is expected to miss three to four weeks - an encouraging development considering the 35-year-old Roberts had to be carried off the field in the ninth inning Thursday when he grabbed his leg after stealing second base at Tropicana Field.

University of Maryland starting senior cornerback Mike Thomas suffered a slightly pulled left hamstring in Saturday's 24-20 loss to Pittsburgh and is questionable for Saturday's game against Georgia Tech in Atlanta. If Thomas can't play, the Terps might be without both starting cornerbacks. Scott Rosen, the team's other senior starting cornerback, has missed three straight games because of a hamstring he pulled in the preseason.Rosen played in the season opener, but has been out since then with a hematoma above the hamstring and an aneurysm below it. Rosen is expected to be seen by team doctor Stan Lavine today.
