A 91-year-old man died after he was struck by a pickup truck in Brooklyn while riding a mobility scooter, according to Anne Arundel County Police. According to the initial investigation, Charles Oliver Fretwell Sr. of Brooklyn was traveling southbound on Hammonds Lane and crossed toward Upland Street when he was struck by a Toyota Tundra driven by Frances James Hall, 58, of Baltimore, police said. The No. 7 Atholton boys and Hammond's girls took different paths to similar rewards at Friday night's Howard County indoor track championships at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex. Atholton won five times and had little trouble defending its team title. The Raiders scored points in each of the 15 events and posted 119 points for an easy victory over No. 9 Reservoir (74). Hammond won just twice, but the Golden Bears posted a number of top-three finishes as they scored 93 points to hold off late-charging No. 3 River Hill (83)

Hammond had to wait 25 years between playoff games. It won't have to wait nearly as long for the next one. After defeating visiting Southern of Anne Arundel, 26-21, on Friday night on a last-second touchdown run by sophomore Dionte Jones, the Golden Bears (10-1) will visit top seed McDonough (10-1) on Friday for the Class 2A South regional championship. Friday's win was the first playoff victory in school history for Hammond, which clinched a share of its first county title last week.

After 51/2 innings Tuesday night, No. 3 Hammond held a 4-2 edge over North Hagerstown. But eight runs in the bottom of the sixth gave the Hubs a commanding lead, propelling them to a 10-4 victory in the state Class 2A baseball semifinals at Arundel High. Things fell apart for the Golden Bears (21-3) after coach Michael Lerner pulled senior starting pitcher Danny Wissmann with one out and two men on in the sixth. Lerner said he and his coaching staff made the move because Wissmann was struggling to find the strike zone after throwing 122 pitches.

The senior pitcher-third baseman led the Golden Bears (15-1) to a 4-0 week with strong pitching and fine work at the plate. Clark, who maintains a 3.15 grade-point average and has accepted a scholarship to play at South Carolina-Aiken, earned the save in Hammond's 8-4 win over River Hill on Thursday and was the winning pitcher as a starter the following day in a 14-6 victory over Mount Hebron. For the week, which also included wins against Howard and Wilde Lake, Clark went 6-for-12 with three homers, nine RBIs and three walks.

With his team down 4-0 against No. 3 Hammond, Atholton coach Kevin Kelly pulled starter Jamie Williams in the third inning, assigned him to left field and whispered in his ear as he took the game ball. "Keep your head in the game," Kelly said. "You're going to have a chance to win it for us in the end." Kelly's encouragement proved prophetic as Williams doubled home the go-ahead run, completing the comeback and propelling the No. 6 Raiders (9-1) to a 6-5 victory over the previously unbeaten Golden Bears on Friday at Atholton.

The last time that Oakland Mills met Hammond, center Greg Whittington didn't play. Unfortunately for host Hammond, he did Thursday night. The junior scored a game-high 25 points - including a clutch 3-pointer to send the game to overtime - as Oakland Mills defeated the Golden Bears, 64-61, in the Class 2A South regional semifinals. Sophomore James Turner led the Bears with 24 points. The Scorpions (17-5) will meet the winner of the Frederick Douglass-Gwynn Park game on Saturday at a site and time to be determined.

The District V championship Tuesday night between fifth-ranked Arundel and No. 11 River Hill served as the last test before each team gets ready for the regional playoffs. Host River Hill showed its mettle as the top seed in Class 3A East with a 57-53 victory over Arundel, the second seed in Class 4A East. The Wildcats could not contain speedy Hawks guard Shantrel Oliver, who finished with 27 points and had a key steal in the final minute to help seal the victory. "They were not like any team we've seen in Howard County; they were way more aggressive," Oliver said.
