If Maryland judicial opinions are highly regarded and influential, and if Maryland courts are generally well-run -- and in both matters, they are -- much of the credit goes to Hall Hammond, a titan of Maryland jurisprudence, who died last Wednesday at 89.Judge Hammond served the public law of the state for 31 years, from his appointment as deputy attorney general in 1941 until his retirement as chief judge of the Court of Appeals in 1972. That service included six years as attorney general and 20 years on the state's highest bench, first appointed by Gov. Theodore R. McKeldin, six of them as chief judge appointed by Gov. J. Millard Tawes.

Former Maryland first lady Kendel Ehrlich, Del. Steve Schuh and acting Anne Arundel County Executive John Hammond led a field of 16 applicants Friday to complete the term of former County Executive John R. Leopold. County Republicans said the unexpected number of applications indicated a healthy interest in setting the county on a path away from the turmoil that has enveloped the government for at least two years. Leopold, 70, a Republican, resigned midway through his second four-year term this month after his conviction on two counts of misconduct for using county employees to perform personal and political tasks.

Hammond had to wait 25 years between playoff games. It won't have to wait nearly as long for the next one. After defeating visiting Southern of Anne Arundel, 26-21, on Friday night on a last-second touchdown run by sophomore Dionte Jones, the Golden Bears (10-1) will visit top seed McDonough (10-1) on Friday for the Class 2A South regional championship. Friday's win was the first playoff victory in school history for Hammond, which clinched a share of its first county title last week.

Hammond's rain-slicked and fog-covered field was the scene of a battle of ball control Friday evening. The No. 13 Golden Bears, who protected the ball, defeated No. 8 River Hill, which did not, 12-9. River Hill (2-2) turned the ball over six times - four fumbles and two interceptions - and had three drives end inside the Hammond's (4-0) 5-yard line. The game saw the return of River Hill's all-county running back Aaron Wells, who sustained a knee injury in a Week 1 win over Reservoir, and wasn't expected back until October.
