Brian Crawford got the record, barely.The Hammond Park star swam the 100-meter individual medley in 1 minute, 4.63 seconds to break the boys' 13-14 record by 2/100ths of a second at the Straehle Invitational Central Maryland Swim League Championships Wednesday at Padonia.The record was held by David DeGruchey, a former Loyola High and North Baltimore Aquatic Club swimmer who ripped off a 1:04.65 in 1977.DeGruchey's remaining 1977 record, in the 100 freestyle (56.31), and Fran Martin's mark in the boys' 9-10 25 butterfly (15.40)

Swimming Eight-year-old Joey Benedetti wasn't even born when Jamie LeGoff was setting records for the Hammond Park Stingrays.In Saturday's dual meet at South Carroll, however, Benedetti shattered two 14-year-old records set by the former UMBC swimmer and current coach of the Howard County YMCA Gators, helping Hammond Park to a season-opening 251-235 victory.Benedetti, a resident of Laurel, swam the 25-meter backstroke in 19.38 seconds, breaking LeGoff's mark of 20.09, and the 25 breaststroke in 23.24, eclipsing the mark of 24.17.

Baseball* 18-and-under boys -- Tight games were the order of the week for the Dayton Raiders, as the Howard County team split two one-run games and won another by two runs.The team began the week with a 7-6 win over Reisterstown. After taking a 4-0 lead in the first inning on RBI singles by Greg Hylock and Mike Cudzilo, the Raiders extended their lead to 7-0 with a three-run third, capped by Kevin Curtin's single to center scoring two.Reisterstown fought back with four runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth, but Dayton then shut the door.

Breast feeding is focus of La Leche discussionA new La Leche League group has scheduled its first meeting for Nov. 4. The meetings will be held in the Savage library, off Gorman Road, at 10:15 a.m. on the first Wednesday of each month.This month's discussion topic is breast feeding. Cindy Clemens will guide the discussion. The group is responsive to questions, she said, so the topic changes during the course of the meeting. She invited new mothers to bring their babies, saying, "We don't want to separate mothers and children."

Thirteen turned out to be a very lucky number Sunday at the 25th annual Howard County Invitational Swim Meet at the Roger Carter Neighborhood Center Pool in Ellicott City.Thirteen swimmers captured multiple first-place medals, and 13 meet records fell during the meet, which took place while the temperature at poolside was a sizzling 100-plus degrees.Leading the pack of winners with four victories each were Brian Best of Clary's Forest and Frank Bowman of West Howard.Best set a meet record in the 9-10 boys 25-yard backstroke with a time of 15.38 seconds.

Developers planning subdivisions in eastern Howard County or projects that require conditional-use permission must meet with neighbors before submitting plans to the county. The next scheduled meetings are: Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Frederick Ward Associates Inc., 7125 Riverwood Drive, Columbia, about a proposal for 50 units on 43 acres on the Meyer property, 5600 U.S. 1. Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Hammond Elementary School, 8110 Aladdin Drive, North Laurel, for a conditional use sought by Hammond Park Recreation Inc. on 8034 Helmart Drive.

Springdale's Amanda White broke Polly Winde's 11-year-old record in the girls' 15-18 100-yard individual medley during the Central Maryland Swim League Championships yesterday at Padonia.White, a Dulaney High School athlete and the Baltimore Sun High School Athlete of the Year for her track and swimming accomplishments, was clocked in 1 minute, 7.83 seconds. That eclipsed by .07 of a second the record set in 1981 by Winde, who three years later came within an eyelash of making the U.S. Olympic team.

Mark Gabriele left his mark on the Central Maryland Swim League, from top to bottom.Gabriele first set a league record as an 8-and-under in 1982 when he won the 25-meter freestyle in 15.8 seconds. The mark still stands.This summer, his last in the league, the former Calvert Hall star and Evening Sun High School Athlete of the Week went out with a bang. He established CMSL records in the 15-18 age group in the 100-meter individual medley (59.31), 100 freestyle (53.20), 50 backstroke (28.45)

Teen-agers brush aside robbery attemptA man armed with a knife tried to rob two Arundel High School students Wednesday as they walked home along Higgins Drive, county police said.The boys, 14 and 15, both of Odenton, were not injured.They told police they were walking along Higgins Drive in Little Hammond Park about 2 p.m. when a young man emerged from a gazebo. The man drew a knife with a 3-inch blade and said, "I'm a drug dealer. You owe me money," the boys told police.They said they told the man they didn't have any money and passed by, but the man threatened to follow one of them home and kill his mother, police said.
