The quest of Massoud Behrani is as ancient as dramatic literature. It's a search for home that is also a quest for a new self. Few actors could come better equipped to play such a role -- the starring part in the new DreamWorks film, The House of Sand and Fog -- than Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley. The high-powered drama, which opens nationwide Friday, shows us a man in jarring transition. When the Islamic Revolution ousted the shah of Iran in 1978, Behrani, a colonel in the Iranian army, was stripped of power, honor and country.

OELLA SURE has come a long way. Twenty years ago, the 19th century mill town across the river from Ellicott City didn't even have indoor plumbing or tap water; recently, a home there sold for $718,000. "There is a certain amount of psychic pleasure in doing this stuff," says Charles L. Wagandt, 78, who bought the time-capsule hamlet 30 years ago and preserved its ambiance through a mix of historic restoration and new construction. Sure, he did it for money. But he was also motivated by sentimental reasons.

Bishopville resident John Hastings describes the Worcester County town where he has lived for 25 years as the hamlet he never wants to leave. Hastings likes it that his home sits on 5 acres along the rural Hammond Road - a road named after his neighbor's early farming family. He also is excited to talk about the new, 1,000-acre Lighthouse Sound golf course development, lined by million-dollar homes, on the southern tip of the Bishopville area closest to Route 90 as it heads into Ocean City.

In a secluded wooded enclave half an hour north of Baltimore, Fourth of July revelers partied the old-fashioned way yesterday - stepping lively in red, white and blue before filing into an open-air tabernacle, where they prayed and sang "Yankee Doodle Dandy" at the top of their lungs. Spectators also waved American flags and cheered on a parade of children showing off their patriotically decorated bikes - a tradition that goes back more than a century. The Fourth of July celebration in Emory Grove may not have bands, floats or beauty queens atop convertibles, but its bare-bones simplicity preserves scenes from a more innocent era. `Safety and freedom' "It's like stepping back in time," said Amy Wenzl, 36, of Parkton, whose three young children proudly accessorized their bikes for the parade.
