MIAMI -- Carlos Huerta came home. Tracy Ham and Mike Pringle came off the bench. And Birmingham came a long way to get blown out.The Baltimore Football Club used the Huerta-Ham-Pringle trifecta to drub Birmingham, 37-0, last night before 20,250 at the Orange Bowl in the second exhibition for both teams.Birmingham was thought to be Baltimore's chief competition in the Canadian Football League's South Division. That might not have been well thought out, as was proven last night during South Florida's test run for a CFL franchise.

HOUSTON - The NASA official who ran shuttle management meetings during the fatal Columbia mission said yesterday that she did not hear the continuing worries of engineers about debris that had struck the shuttle. In her first public statement, Linda Ham, chairwoman of the mission management team, defended NASA and its staff with passion, and at times with tears. But her account also depicted a space agency in which internal communications broke down, whether because of a failure of process or of courage.

I love to celebrate the return of these miraculous mushrooms with a simple morel saute, or fricassee, flavored with ham and herbs. Cider tastes better to me in November than in the earlier months of autumn. It shouldn't be so. Most of the apple cider sold in America is "sweet cider," the juice and pulp of apples that have been crushed and pasteurized. What we call apple juice is usually sweet cider that has gone through a filter. If I were drinking "hard cider," my yen for November would make more sense. November was once the beginning of the hard cider season. It was the time when apple farmers tapped that special barrel to see how things were progressing.

The Baltimore Stallions nearly let one slip away against rival British Columbia last night. But in the end, quarterback Tracy Ham and kicker Carlos Huerta wouldn't allow it.Ham drove the Stallions 54 yards in two minutes to set the dramatic stage for Huerta, who kicked a 20-yard field goal with 11 seconds remaining to lift Baltimore to a 28-26 victory over the Lions before 33,228, the largest crowd at Memorial Stadium this season.Baltimore (14-3) won its ninth straight and handed British Columbia (9-8)

Quarterback Doug Flutie made a triumphant return to his hometown last night, leading the Calgary Stampeders to a 42-16 victory over the Baltimore CFLs before 39,247 at Memorial Stadium.Flutie completed 24 of 38 passes for 278 yards and two touchdowns to spoil the return of pro football to Baltimore after a 10-year absence.It was the first loss by Baltimore's Canadian Football League expansion team after one regular-season win and two preseason wins.Baltimore quarterback Tracy Ham was 23 of 33 for 286 yards with one touchdown in the defeat.
