The Skipjacks, who will have two new faces on the ice tonight, likely will add another player today -- one you might have seen on television during the Winter Olympics.The Washington Capitals are expected to sign defenseman Brad Schlegel, who played for the Canadian silver-medal team in Albertville, France.Schlegel, 23, was the eighth draft choice of the Capitals in 1988. A 5-foot-10, 180-pound defenseman from Kitchener, Ontario, he played for Team Canada the past four years. He had two goals and three assists in the Olympics.

John Byce couldn't have regained the Skipjacks' scoring lead in much more dramatic fashion.With a backhand flick of his stick, Byce jammed in his 22nd goal of the season with 2:20 remaining to give the Skipjacks a 7-6 victory over the Hershey Bears last night before 2,651 at the Baltimore Arena.Byce entered the game with a one-goal edge over Reggie Savage. After Savage tied him with his 20th, Byce scored his 21st only to have Savage match him again.Byce's 22nd broke a 6-6 tie, the fifth deadlock of the evening.

Dinesh Singh, 70, a former foreign minister of India and member of Prime Minister P. V. Rao's Cabinet, died yesterday in New Delhi after a long illness. He had been a member of Parliament for 38 years and became foreign minister in 1993. He won a seat in Parliament in 1957, about a decade after India gained independence. He served in the External Affairs Ministry from 1962 to 1966 and held Cabinet posts under then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.The Rev. Richard C. Halverson, 79, a Presbyterian minister who retired in March after 14 years as the U.S. Senate's 60th chaplain, died of an undisclosed cause Tuesday in Washington.

HAMILTON, Ontario -- The Skipjacks all but knocked the Hamilton Canucks out of the American Hockey League playoff picture last night with a 3-1 win.The victory put the Skipjacks eight points in front of the Canucks in the league's Southern Division and six ahead of the Hershey Bears. Baltimore has nine games remaining, Hershey eight and Hamilton 10.After a sluggish start, the Skipjacks scored a couple of goals in the second period and added an insurance goal in the third. Martin Gendron, Trevor Halverson and Martin Jiranek scored for the Skipjacks, and Danny Kesa was the lone Canuck to beat Byron Dafoe.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Centers Don Biggs and Mike Stevens had a goal and two assists each to lead the Binghamton Rangers to a 6-4 victory over the Skipjacks last night before a sellout crowd of 4,808 at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.Reggie Savage led the Skipjacks with one goal and one assist. Chris Longo, Trevor Halverson and Randy Pearce scored the Skipjacks' other goals.Per Djoos, Brian McReynolds, Steven King and Dave Tomlinson also scored for Binghamton.King's goal, at 8:14 of the third period, gave the Rangers a 5-4 lead that they would not relinquish.
