Since Sam Wessels was diagnosed with autism at age 2, doctors have offered his mother a litany of drugs for the boy from Prozac and Ritalin to Metadate CD and Strattera, commonly used to treat ADHD. Other "alternative" medicine pitches have included special diets and even nicotine. "This is the best you can do?" Sam's mother Lin Wessels wondered. Wessels, like many parents, has waded through a lot of legitimate — but much more illegitimate — research on therapies in the struggle with autism, which affects 1 in 110 children and has no cure.

Howard Bank has agreed to buy Cecil Bank's branch at 3 W. Bel Air Ave. in Aberdeen, the institutions announced Monday. Under the deal, Howard Bank, based in Ellicott City, will acquire at least $38 million in loans and $37.9 million in deposits from Cecil Bank. That's about 10 percent of Cecil Bank's deposits. "It was a fit for both of us," said Mary Halsey, Cecil's CEO. "They were looking to expand; we were looking to head back into Cecil County, where are roots are. But when a deadline passed last week, 12,000 students without proof of the hepatitis B and chickenpox vaccines were excluded from school - despite a three-month extension and two-week grace period. Officials were left scrambling to get the students into compliance, while scratching their heads to figure out what went wrong.
