50 Years Ago* An enthusiastic group of Annapolis business and political leaders gathered for a session today under the slogan, "Keep the Naval Academy in Annapolis." It is supported by Gov. O'Conor who plans to enlist aid at the Eastern Governors Conference to secure Naval Academy retention on the East Coast. -- The Sun, Aug. 10, 1945.* The gates of the Naval Academy swung open to the public for the first time since Pearl Harbor and the public streamed in to watch the Middies celebrate the victory over Japan.

I must write in response to Mr. Halsey's letter about speed concerns near Westchester Elementary School ("Need for caution, but not alarm, at Catonsville elementary school," Catonsville Times, Oct. 17). I walk down Old Frederick Road between Edmondson Avenue and past Westchester Elementary School, every day of the year, usually more than once, and have been doing so for close to 10 years. I can tell you that, at all times of the day, there are many speeding motorists in that area.

The Naval Academy will break ground for a two-story visitor center at 2 p.m. on Oct. 26.The facility will be located on the south side of Halsey Field House and will replace the academy's 30-year-old visitors booth in a first-floor corner of Ricketts Hall.The $4.5 million building will include a gift shop and an 80-seat auditorium that will show a film about the life of the midshipmen and the history of the academy. The second floor will contain naval exhibits and an observation deck overlooking the City Dock and the school.

ANNAPOLIS -- Brigade boxing champions from as far back as 1944 will return for the 50th anniversary celebration of the competition at the Naval Academy tomorrow (noon) at Hubbard Hall.The 1991 brigade champions will be crowned during a tournament tonight (7:30) at Halsey Field House.Among the 70 ex-champions who will attend is Lee Bramlett, captain of the 1946 football team who later ran for governor of Mississippi and made a fortune in the sugar business."Another guy coming back is Rod McKeon, a three-time champion at 165 pounds," said Tony Rubino, the academy's boxing coach from 1948-64.

50 years agoDick Scott, football center for the U.S. Naval Academy, was named to the 1947 Associated Press All-America second squad today. Art Markel, end, and Dick Shimshak, tackle, were given honorable mention. -- The Sun, Dec. 3, 1947.The Anne Arundel County Board of Education has chosen a site opposite the Harundale development for the new elementary school in Glen Burnie. Harder and Dressell are architects for the 20-room schoolhouse equipped with a cafeteria. -- The Sun, Dec. 6, 1947.

High school graduation set at academyMidshipmen won't be the only seniors graduating at the U.S. Naval Academy this year.For the first time since 1987, Annapolis High School students will be graduating in Annapolis, at the academy's Halsey Field House, instead of the Capital Center in Prince George's County."

Harford Community College is pleased to announce those students named to the dean's list for the fall 2012 semester. Students on the list have achieved high academic honor. In qualifying for the dean's list, a student must receive all As and Bs grades and have a 3.50 to 3.75 GPA (grade point average). Full-time students must have completed 12 credit hours during the semester. Part-time students are eligible after having completed 12 credit hours and then completing six credit hours during the current semester.

Faced with the highest number of measles cases in a dozen years, officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are warning parents to vaccinate their children to ward off further outbreaks. From January through July, 131 measles cases have been identified in 15 states and the District of Columbia - the most since 1996, the CDC announced yesterday. About half of the cases involve children whose parents refused to vaccinate them for religious or philosophical reasons. No cases have been detected in Maryland.
