Naval Academy to start building visitor centerThe Naval Academy will break ground Tuesday for a $4.5 million visitor center.The two-story, 27,000-square-foot building will be on the south side of the Halsey Field House. It will replace a visitor center in the first floor of Ricketts Hall.The new center will include a gift shop and an 80-seat auditorium that will show a film about midshipmen life at the academy and the academy's history. On the second floor, an observation deck will allow visitors to view the Annapolis harbor, the city and part of the academy.

High school graduation set at academyMidshipmen won't be the only seniors graduating at the U.S. Naval Academy this year.For the first time since 1987, Annapolis High School students will be graduating in Annapolis, at the academy's Halsey Field House, instead of the Capital Center in Prince George's County."

The Naval Academy will break ground for a two-story visitor center at 2 p.m. on Oct. 26.The facility will be located on the south side of Halsey Field House and will replace the academy's 30-year-old visitors booth in a first-floor corner of Ricketts Hall.The $4.5 million building will include a gift shop and an 80-seat auditorium that will show a film about the life of the midshipmen and the history of the academy. The second floor will contain naval exhibits and an observation deck overlooking the City Dock and the school.

ANNAPOLIS -- Brigade boxing champions from as far back as 1944 will return for the 50th anniversary celebration of the competition at the Naval Academy tomorrow (noon) at Hubbard Hall.The 1991 brigade champions will be crowned during a tournament tonight (7:30) at Halsey Field House.Among the 70 ex-champions who will attend is Lee Bramlett, captain of the 1946 football team who later ran for governor of Mississippi and made a fortune in the sugar business."Another guy coming back is Rod McKeon, a three-time champion at 165 pounds," said Tony Rubino, the academy's boxing coach from 1948-64.

Since 1942, midshipmen have been squaring off in the Naval Academy's annual brigade boxing tournament, trying to win on of eight spots on a squad that represents the academy at regional and national competitions. This year, 87 boxers laced on gloves at the beginning of the season in search of the brigade title in their weight divisions.The midshipmen who will represent the academy this year are Colin Keenan, a 139-pound junior from Brooklyn, N.Y.; Liam Huin, a 147-pound junior from Dennis, Mass.

New Annapolis garage opens on West Street Annapolis officially opened its new Knighton parking garage on Colonial and West streets in Annapolis yesterday, city officials said. The garage will charge $1 an hour and a maximum of $10 a day for hourly parkers. Monthly rates will be $80 for those using the garage from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Those seeking 24-hour access will pay $100 a month. Knighton is the third garage to be operated by the city, along with the Hillman and Gott's Court garages.

The Navy's precision flying team, the Blue Angels, will perform high-speed precision maneuvers during the U.S. Naval Academy's Commissioning Week.Safety precautions will be in effect.The Naval Academy Bridge will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians, and sections of the Severn River will be closed to boaters.The Naval Academy gates will be closed to vehicle traffic, except for academy residents, cars with handicapped stickers and shuttle buses, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday.
