McDonogh's girls tennis team completed its eighth straight season without a loss yesterday when the Eagles (11-0) swept AIS A Division rival Bryn Mawr (9-1) in five matches.The AIS's top singles player, freshman Vicki Brick, defeated Bryn Mawr freshman Sara Barnett, 6-2, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Heather Cole beat previously unbeaten Heather Brownley by the same score.In doubles, Stephanie Rosen and Bana Hajj won in straight sets, while Stacy Eyth and Leena Krishnaswamy, as well as Shireen Santosham and Ellen Haller, won in split sets, the only two sets the Eagles have dropped this season.

On March 27, 2004 MARY T. HOLTHAUS (nee Haller); beloved wife of the late Joseph Leonard Holthaus; devoted mother of Bonnie Freeman, Joseph, John and James Holthaus. She is also survived by six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at the Kaczorowski Funeral Home, P.A., 1201 Dundalk Ave. on Tuesday from 6 to 7 P.M. at which time a memorial service will be held. Interment private. In lieu of flowers please make donations in her name to the American Cancer Society.

Dr. Louise Schnaufer, an internationally renowned pediatric surgeon who had been associated with Union Memorial Hospital and Johns Hopkins Hospital early in her career, died Oct. 14 of complications from Alzheimer's disease at Cathedral Village, a Philadelphia retirement community. The former Ruxton resident was 86. The daughter of shopkeepers, Dr. Louise Schnaufer was born in Towson and lived above her family's York Road general store, F. W. Schnaufer and Son, which had been established in Towson in the late 19th century by her late paternal grandfather.

BLOOMINGTON -- Kara Ruppel traveled the ultimate in highs and lows for an athlete yesterday.Ruppel, a University of Maryland senior, apparently had made the U.S. Olympic team one minute, then found out five minutes later she was off the team when officials discovered that Seattle's Maylon Hanold actually had earned the third and final spot on the women's single kayak team.Hanold, in a change of scheduling from Saturday, had the last run of the day and turned in a 161.68 score to take the third spot from Ruppel (165.

West Friendship Elementary School remained closed today while officials determine whether asbestos released into the air over the weekend can be contained and cleaned in time to allow children to finish the school year, which ends Friday. "It might be closed through the rest of the week. We just don't know at this point," said Howard County schools spokeswoman Patti Caplan. The school was closed yesterday as well. Workers using heavy machinery to peel back asbestos tiles from the gym floor Saturday accidentally broke some, said Richard McIntire, spokesman for the Maryland Department of the Environment, which is collaborating with the school system to decide how to proceed safely.

FAIR HILL -- Todd Trewin is on a journey of redemption with a remarkable horse named Sandscript.The pair's latest odyssey has taken them on a six-week cross-country jaunt of horse trials and schooling sessions. In a two-horse trailer, pulled by a pickup truck, they have traveled from their home near Seattle to Idaho, New Mexico, Kentucky, Virginia and now to Cecil County, as competitors in this weekend's international three-day event at the Fair Hill Natural Resources Center.The last time the American public saw a snapshot of the pair, included in a 13-minute packaged glimpse of the equestrian three-day event, was on an NBC telecast of the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona.
