Fourth in a series of profiles of local Olympians. He dances on the water, the churning froth around him supplying the melody. It's a tune Lecky Haller has known his entire adult life. It seduces him, tortures him, rewards him. Haller, 43, the world's premier tandem slalom canoeist, hopes the whitewater in Sydney will play him a victory song. This is not the first Olympics for the Glencoe native - he finished fourth in 1992 - but in all probability it is the last in a career that began in the early 1980s.

`Working families' are political focus Take a soccer mom, add a NASCAR dad, blend them together in a heated election year and what do you get? A working family. Working families, a deliciously ambiguous segment of society, are hands-down the most coveted demographic among candidates vying to be Maryland's next governor. When Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. strives to mitigate the electric rate increases, he's doing it "for Maryland's working families." Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley's recent win in his lawsuit against the Public Service Commission is "a victory for working families."

Several pupils, in kindergarten through second grade, stood on the stage at Centennial Lane Elementary School trying to twirl "poi balls," just as they had seen Kathleen Haller demonstrate. Haller, who was giving a presentation Thursday at the school on Hawaiian culture, dance and music, made it look so easy. She simply held one poi ball by the string in each hand and twirled them at her sides and even over her head. Her son, Tom Haller, 20, who was helping out with the show, did an even faster and more elaborate demonstration with the poi balls, which are used in Hawaii for dance and exercise, Haller explained.
