Many federal workers in and around Washington make their home in the Baltimore area, so when two of them get together at a party, they immediately begin swapping commuting strategies. "Invariably, the first question that I get when I say I commute to D.C. is 'Oh, do you take the train?'" said Elaine Papp, a Federal Hill resident who works for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in southeast Washington. "When I say, 'No,' then they say, 'How do you get there?'" How to get "there" is a question thousands of Marylanders must figure out. About 101,370 federal employees in Maryland commute to Washington, according to 2010 estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Colonial Arms & Sporting Goods, a Glen Burnie gun store that was the scene of a 1987 shooting that left its owner and the gunman dead, is closing its doors.A fixture in the community for 10 years, the store endured an increase in gun shop robberies and break-ins that seemed to parallel the increasingly violent society. And the employees say restrictive gun laws -- such as waiting periods for handgun purchases -- helped drain their profit."I'm going to play golf," said Joseph Serio, 63, who has managed the shop for 32 years, since founder John Hittle first opened a store in Halethorpe.

Before word trickled out this week about President Bush's plans to visit Halethorpe, the most celebrated event in this well-kept corner of southwest Baltimore County was probably the Fair of the Iron Horse back in 1927. Not to say that Halethorpe residents have minded the lull between that much-revered fair -- which attracted crowds from around the country and railroad exhibits from around the world -- and the presidential entourage that will descend on the Commerce Drive Home Depot on Friday.
