Get a hair cut and help animals at the same time. On Aug. 1, Patrick Lomantini, owner of Lomantini The Salon, is embarking on a 50-state tour to complete 50 haircuts per day in 50 days to bring attention to and raise money for the many animals in shelters across the country. Lomantini will stop at Bel Air's Domani Studio on Aug. 10 for a day-long cutting extravaganza. All haircuts will be free, however a suggested donation of at least $20 per person is recommended. That money will go to The Humane Society of Harford County.

Larry Bird cut his own hair at the Olympics. He did this, he said, because he found out that a haircut in Barcelona would cost him $80.Eighty dollars truly is an outrageous price for a haircut, but Larry Bird earns $80 about every one-tenth of a second.I know why Bird really cut his own hair: He is afraid of Mystery Haircuts.Mystery Haircuts are the haircuts you get when you are away from home and can't wait until you get to your regular barber. The second worst place to get a Mystery Haircut is a hotel barbershop because the barbers know they will not see you again for a long time.

My plans for today call for a much-needed haircut. It's a once-a-month routine and like most people, I don't like to experiment. Old habits don't disappear. The hair lessons learned as a child continue to dictate my behavior today. A fine gentleman named John R. DeVos had a barber shop on Greenmount Avenue, just to the east of old Oriole Park in Waverly. Johnnie, as we called him, had cut the hair of my great-grandfather, grandfather and father, my uncle and cousins.

LOS ANGELES -- Actress Keri Russell says it was a "brave and liberating thing to do." Her boss, Susanne Daniels, the head of programming at the WB, thinks it was a knucklehead thing to do and says she doesn't want to see it happen ever again. We're talking about about Felicity's hair. With hundreds of channels and millions of possible shows to write about, the key to covering television is to know what matters. Felicity's hair matters. Over the summer, Russell, star of the WB's "Felicity," cut her long, curly hair, and six months later it is still one of the hottest topics of discussion on the Winter Press Tour.

Funny Cide's owners swear they were never especially superstitious. At least not until the former high school buddies opted to save on transportation money by renting a school bus to take them from their hotel to Churchill Downs in May 2003. After their long shot gelding won the Kentucky Derby that day, they rented exactly the same sort of iconic yellow buses to transport them to the Preakness (which they won) and the Belmont (they lost). "We were going to ride those school buses as long as they would take us," co-owner Jack Knowlton said this week.

Super Bowl Sunday arrives, and Nate Smith has an important message for his girlfriend, Darlene Griffin. It goes like this: "Don't be wearin' my slippers. " That's a warning Nate uttered the other day, after cutting my hair in the West Baltimore shop where he styles and teaches the tonsorial arts. He seemed to be asking me to convey the message for him, though I'm sure he's delivered it directly by now: "Don't be wearin' my slippers, Darlene. " Those are Nate's 'Niners slippers, see, a gift from a customer.
