Mike Harrison of Mount Airy was fourth in the end of the season's point standings at Hagerstown Speedway for the Limited Late Models. Harrison finished the season with 3,031 points to top off a great season.At the 75-80 Dragway 32 anniversary banquet, eight countians received awards.Roger Jorss of Sykesville won the Most Outstanding Class II Driver for 1992, and Rick Waxter of Westminster was named the Most Improved Drag Racer.Larry Hoff of Westminster was selected as the Gentlemen Racer, and Buddy Wilson of Westminster was the Hard Luck Award winner.

Some new blood made a strong showing on tracks last week.Jarrod Spicer of Woodbine won the Junior Dragster League in his Next Generation 140-inch dragster at Mason-Dixon Dragway last Sunday. Spicer, the son of Lou and Phyllis Spicer, ran a 15.25 ET on a 15.10 Dial-In on a .536 reaction time.It was Westminster residents one and two in the Trail-Way eight-cylinder stock feature race. Mark Shorb got his first Trail-Way victory of the season and Corky Stull was second last Sunday night. Brad Green, another Westminster resident, was a heat winner in the four-cylinder division at Trail-Way.

With most of the speedways closed for the season, action was light last weekend.Westminster's Corky Stull won the Consolation Round for Thundercars at Lincoln Speedway after placing 12th in the feature race and seventh in his heat.Stull was also fourth in the Thunder 8-cylinder stock car feature at Trail-Way Speedway last Sunday.Randy Zechman of Westminster was second in his heat race for the Semi-Lates at Lincoln and was 16th in the feature race.Jesse Wentz of Manchester was eighth in the heat race for Sprint cars at Lincoln.

The season has concluded for Trail-Way Speedway in Hanover, and Hampstead resident Greg Messersmith captured the 8-Cylinder Stocks with 487 points.Messersmith used a sixth-place finish on Oct. 2 at Trail-Way to clinch the championship in the points standings. He was the top area driver in the point standings, but he didn't have the only superb showing.Mike Stull of Westminster was second in the Micro Sprints with 688. Stull was also fourth in the feature race and won the heat.Westminster's Brad McClelland was third in the feature race and fourth in the point standings with 649.Steve Owings, also of Westminster, was the final area driver for the Micros with a sixth-place finish in the point standings with 478.In the 8-Cylinder stocks, Gregory Richardson of Sykesville was 10th in the overall points (291)

The racing season is coming to a close, and racers are scaling back their appearances at tracks.One driver who is continuing his season is Jeff Shepard of Finksburg. He was third in the 25-lap sprint car feature at Lincoln Speedway on Saturday night, finishing behind Donnie Kreitz after a red flag was waved on Lap 9. He also finished third in his heat.In addition to Shepard's performance at Lincoln, Randy Zechman finished fourth in his semi-late heat and 15th in the feature. Corky Stull of Westminster was sixth in his heat and 18th in the Thundercar feature race.

Area drivers found the cooler weather and the full moon to their liking last weekend as the racing season is coming to a conclusion.Hampstead's Charlie Schaffer grabbed second place at Winchester Speedway's 40-lap summer championship for late models. Schaffer had applied pressure the entire race and went into second on the 31st lap, but could not catch winner Rick Eckert on Saturday night. Rick Jones of Westminster was 10th in the same late-model race.Manchester's Jesse Wentz placed fifth after winning his heat at the Williams Grove Speedway for the 25-lap super sprint feature on Sunday night.

Consistency has been the key to the season for Manchester resident Jesse Wentz. Though he hasn't reached the winner's circle, he's almost always among the top 15 and rarely fails to finish.Last weekend Wentz moved closer to the top spot, placing fifth in the 25-lap sprint feature Sunday at Susquehanna Speedway, despite threatening weather and rainouts at other area tracks. In other weekend motor-sports action:* Cris Eash of Hanover, a former Woodbine resident, was third in the 20-lap sprint feature at Williams Grove Speedway on Aug. 14. Eash also was 16th in the prestigious Knoxville Nationals feature race the following night in Iowa.

Scott Chasen and Gene Belt, both of Taneytown, came away winners at the Mason-Dixon Dragway in Hagerstown on Sunday night.Chasen, driving his 1967 Falcon, captured the Class II Heavy honors by running an elapsed time of 12.79 seconds on an estimated dial-in of 12.75. Woodbine's Ed Talbert advanced to the semifinals and Chris Hruska of Mount Airy was a third-round winner.Belt came away with the top prize in the motorcycle division, running a 9.49 estimated time on a 9.38 dial-in on his 1100cc Suzuki.

Union Bridge resident Howard Williams got his first-ever semi-late victory at Lincoln Speedway in Hanover, Pa., last weekend.Williams' June 6 win wasn't the only one for area drivers.Jeff Shepard of Upperco placed second in the super sprint feature and Randy Zechman of Westminster was fourth in the semi-late feature behind Williams.* Cris Eash, a Hanover, Pa., resident formerly of Woodbine, made it three wins out of the last four attempts at Selinsgrove (Pa.) Speedway June 6. Eash also was fourth in the super sprint last Sunday at Susquehanna Speedway.
