With its undefeated record on the line, top-ranked Boys' Latin closed out its regular season with a 12-9 win over visiting, No. 4 St. Paul's yesterday. Before an estimated home crowd of 5,500, the Lakers defeated their rival of 73 years and now lead the all-time series, 43-42-1. Junior Travis Reed led the Lakers with four goals, including two within a 1:31 span in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Reed said the team has already moved past the undefeated season, because with the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference playoffs looming next week, its first loss of 2006 would be its last.

On a day when its offense seemed stuck in the mud, Boys' Latin's defense refused to let Mount St. Joseph rain on its parade. The Lakers' boys lacrosse team withstood a third-period offensive surge by the Gaels, then scored three of the final four goals in an 8-4 victory played in the rain at Mount St. Joseph. The No. 1 Lakers won for the eighth straight time to move to 10-1, 4-1 in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference. The Gaels (3-3, 2-3), whose No. 3 ranking is believed to be the highest in school history, had won three straight.

For nearly three quarters yesterday, Dulaney's boys lacrosse team appeared to be on the verge of an upset for the ages. The visiting and 10th-ranked Lions never had trailed against top-ranked, defending Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference champion Boys' Latin, and were ahead by two goals with just over four minutes left in the third period. But the Lions' dreams dissipated like a puff of smoke when the Lakers' high-powered offense caught fire behind Brett Weiss, Travis Reed and Josh Perlow, who combined for seven goals and 10 assists in a 13-6 win before about 800 rain-soaked fans.
