A Grasonville man died yesterday afternoon while working on his boat at a Kent Island marina, Department of Natural Resources police said. George K. Haddaway, 67, was working on his boat in the rain using an electric grinder when his wife, Roberta "Lorraine" Haddaway, saw him falling over the side of the boat, said DNR spokesman John Surrick. Mary D. Wallnofer, who lives on a neighboring boat, called Queen Anne's County emergency center, then jumped into the water, where Haddaway was floating facedown and unconscious, Surrick said.

Despite last Wednesday's daylong rain, Kermit Henning, Tim Flannery, Glen Burnie's Tom Elliott and I joined Claiborne guide Norm Haddaway for a dynamite sea duck hunt off of Cook's Point.Haddaway, who operates Chesapeake Expeditions guide service (410-745-5682), is probably one of the most innovative and most experienced sea duck guide operating on the Chesapeake Bay.To my knowledge he was the first sea ducker to have shunned strings of cheap, plastic milk carton-based decoys and painted wooden blocks for high-quality traditional decoys.

In one continuous, seemingly effortless motion, Norm Haddaway brought his 10-gauge pump action shotgun to his shoulder, swung the barrel on a fast departing whitewing scoter and fired. The duck fell to the surface of the Choptank River."See, all you have to do is put the front bead on the duck's bill, pull the trigger and keep the gun swinging," he instructed.Sykesville's Kermit Henning, Taneytown area waterfowl buff Tim Flannery, Tom Elliott and I had been blasting holes into the rain-laden sky throughout the morning and we were still far short of our combined 20-duck daily bag limit.

"Boys, I swear I saw gravy dripping off those wing tips," bellowed Claiborne waterfowl guide Norm Haddaway as a flock of protected Canada geese flew out of shotgun range.I had been looking forward to last Monday's sea-duck hunting trip with as much anticipation as an outdoorsman can muster. Norm Haddaway is one of the premier sea-duck guides working the mid-Bay area around Tilghman Island, and I've managed a memorable day with him annually for nearly a decade. With me were local sea-duck fans Kermit Henning, Bob Simmons, and Buck Perry.

Sea ducking, in case you have never enjoyed the thrill, is sort of like shooting pheasant-sized doves with a 40- or 50-mph tail wind behind them while you're standing on a rocking chair. It is just about as much pure fun as a person can stand in a single outing. This will be only the fourth or fifth year that I have gone out after sea ducks, but I was hooked the moment a string of them zoomed past Norm Haddaway's boat.I had been looking forward to that first outing with great anticipation, partly because of Haddaway's growing reputation as perhaps the country's premier sea duck guide, partly because of his reputation for unforgettable quotes and to see for myself if these ducks were as difficult to bag as rumor had it.If I recall correctly, our party consisted of Frederick's Jim Gilford, Bob Gooch, up from Virginia, a friend of Haddaway's, Bob Simmons and me."

Severna Park girls soccer coach Gary Lam has consistently preached to his team the necessity of taking advantage of lucky breaks. The fourth-ranked Falcons are apparently good listeners as they converted a penalty kick off a questionable call and added an insurance goal to defeat visiting and No. 6 Arundel, 2-0, in Severna Park last night. "It could've gone either way," Lam said of last night's showdown between what were the last two teams in the county with undefeated records. "We were fortunate to get a break tonight."
