Talk about bad "Company"!"Company Business," a comedy-thriller in the old East-West tradition, probably wouldn't have been any good even if the Cold War hadn't dried up and blown away, but if it had stuck around a year or so, this turkey would still gobble. It's one of those espionage things, full of intricate plot complications about double agents and controls and penetrations, in which, as per usual, the old order of butt-kicking cowboy is celebrated over the new order of computer whiz. But the movie is so dense and charmless, it just lies there.

3:30 p.m. [Comedy Central] Offbeat, quirky - that would be just a start to describe this comedy. It has Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Danny Glover, Bill Murray, and Owen and Luke Wilson (right). I won't even try to summarize the plot, but part of the story concerns Luke Wilson's Richie, a former tennis star who had to quit the game after having a breakdown in the middle of a big match. So, according to the "watch it" rules I just made up, that qualifies the movie for this space.

The Anne Arundel County Board of Appeals yesterday issued Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. a grading permit to begin disposing of fly ash at Brandonwood Business Park on Solley Road in Glen Burnie.BGE has used fly ash, a waste product from its coal-fired generators at the Brandon Shores and Wagner Point power plants, as structural fill material on two parcels of land across from the power plant since 1982.The Coalition of Communities and Citizens Against Fly Ash appealed in mid-April the grading permit that would allow BGE to use a third parcel for fly ash disposal, saying the company had failed to meet a grading requirement to have on hand an overall site plan.

During the early 1990s, a group of school librarians recognized that Maryland did not have a statewide award for outstanding children's books. So in 1992, the Maryland Educational Media Organization developed the Black-Eyed Susan Book Award program. That program has blossomed into an annual contest that this year drew votes from 50,000 children throughout Maryland, and is credited by school librarians with drawing welcome attention to a wealth of children's literature that otherwise might have been overlooked.
