Severna Park girls basketball coach Kevin McGrath said his team played its best game of the year yesterday. The Falcons' timing was odd, to say the least.Despite losing its third starter to a season-ending injury last week and being a decided underdog to a North County team two spots higher in the Class 4A Region IV standings, Severna Park led most of theway in winning, 56-41.Ten Falcons scored, led by sophomore guardAmy Carnaggio with 13 points. Carnaggio is subbing for Tami Riley, out with a knee injury since early in the year.

One thing Mike St. Martin won't have to worry about as the replacement for Steve Malone as boys soccer coach at North County is getting his team in the playoffs. That will happen no matter who is in charge. It's not exactly a pressure-filled task.Under a new state rule, any team registering by Oct. 1 is eligible for the region tournament. Records don't matter. Just fill out the paperwork and show up on time. And with the seedings determined through a random draw, the number of wins that a team accumulates is even less important.

Severna Park boys soccer coach Don Gregg knows what it's like to lose a big game on penalty kicks. In 1979, Gregg's Falcons were eliminated from the state playoffs when they lost a five-man shootout to Walt Whitman. In an effort to avoid that happening again, Gregg has required his players to make three penalty kicks before they leave practice.Last night at Arundel High, the extra kicks paid off, as second-seeded Severna Park defeated No. 3 seed Northwestern of Prince George's County, 6-2, in a shootout after the teams had played to a 1-1 tie in regulation, to advance to the Class 4A state championship.
