Mid-November through the month or so that followed — a time when the Digital Harbor boys basketball team was more like an uneven collection of individual talent — is now a distant memory. No more struggling to identify roles. No more having one player or the next trying to do too much. No more losses. The surging Rams, who started the season with a 2-4 mark, have turned the corner and then some. Taking turns stepping up on offense, rebounding at both ends and playing solid team defense, the No. 6 Rams proved too tough to handle for Gwynn Park in the Class 2A state semifinals, coming away with a dominating 75-45 win over the Yellow Jackets from Prince George's County Friday night at Comcast Center.

Sometimes when you watch a high school sporting event, you just know you will never see anything like it again. That's what I said after watching Jess Harlee's incredible individual performance in leading Fallston to a state girls basketball championship in 2009. Then came 2010. Harlee, who now plays at West Virginia, spent most of her senior season on the bench, sidelined after surgery to repair a torn knee ligament, but once her doctor cleared her to play in mid-February, she threw herself into helping the Cougars repeat as state champs.

It was no mistake when the public address announcer at Comcast Center introduced defending state champion City as starting two centers in Saturday's Class 2A state final. On a night when the Knights played far from their best basketball, they used their imposing height in the paint, led by 6-foot-8 Jordan Latham and 6-foot-7 Aron Nwankwo, to frustrate opposing Gwynn Park all night, holding the Prince George's team to 29 percent shooting in a 56-45 win. "I wanted to put our size out there," said City coach Mike Daniel, who has started dual centers for the past handful of games.

For most of the game, the Liberty girls basketball team refused to let Gwynn Park pull away. In the end, however, the Lions gave it away. The Lions weren't used to dealing with the smothering defensive pressure applied by the Yellow Jackets, and they committed 31 turnovers en route to a 64-51 loss in a Class 2A state semifinal Friday at UMBC's RAC Arena. Liberty (21-6), making its first state semifinal appearance since 1983, stayed close until the final five minutes, when the Prince George's County team forced eight turnovers.
