Astride the Harley-Davidson motorcycle, the Baltimore County police officer cut a striking figure. The officer was a rookie, on the short side - and an African-American woman. Twenty years ago, Gwendolyn Parrish became the first black woman on the Baltimore County police force on motorcycle patrol. The image of her wearing "black leather motorcycle boots up to her knees" is still the way Baltimore County police chief James Johnson remembers Parrish, who died last Saturday at 56 from complications following surgery.

Gwendolyn M. "Gwen" Bruggman, a homemaker and volunteer, died Aug. 9 from complications of a broken hip at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. The Brightwood resident was 84. The daughter of a businessman and a homemaker, the former Gwendolyn Medill was born in Baltimore and raised on Bolton Hill. After graduating from Notre Dame Preparatory School in 1945, she attended Washington College for a year. She was married in 1946 to G. Harry Bruggman, a manufacturers' representative, and lived for many years in Roland Park and Ruxton.

On June 29, 2009 W. GWENDOLYN (MORROW) MEDCALF, of Cumberland, Md. and formerly of Ringgold, Md., died, wife of the late George A. Medcalf; mother of Todd (Deborah), Thomas (Evelyn) and Travis (Elizabeth) Medcalf and grandmother of Kelley, Cassandra, Sarah and Kate Medcalf. Born in Catonsville and a graduate of Western High School, she was a homemaker, a pianist and an artist. Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cumberland is handling arrangements. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
