Lacrosse, as Calvert Hall coach Bryan Kelly put it, is "a game of runs." The Cardinals have plenty of scoring punch and are capable of going on runs at any time. Those runs aren't possible if they don't have the ball, though. Enter midfielder Ryan Gutowski. With No. 2 Calvert Hall up a goal and No. 4 St. Mary's closing the gap, the junior won seven straight faceoffs, sparking a five-goal run and a 13-8 Cardinals win. "That was the key," Kelly said of Gutowski's performance. "He really was huge in the second half for us. When they got the ball early on, they were getting it in the net, but we started to control the ball a little bit more on faceoffs, and that was definitely a critical point for us to come out with the W."

The Maryland Stadium Authority's Walt Gutowski, who works full-time on getting an NFL franchise for Baltimore, is upbeat about the city's chances, despite the negativism that resulted from Robert Tisch's withdrawal from the local effort to buy half the New York Giants.Says Gutowski: "We don't feel that the loss of Tisch killed it at all. We've had some interesting prospective owners surface just in the last month such as Tom Clancy and the Malcolm Glazer family. I think we have a pleasant problem choosing between all these potential owners.

IN TWO MONTHS on the job, Walt Gutowski, the Maryland Stadium Authority's NFL expansion coordinator, has learned a lot about Baltimore's chances of getting back in pro football. That largely has involved learning what the other cities vying for expansion franchises are doing."You have to know your competition," says Gutowski, who was the Baltimore Colts' public relations director until the team left for Indianapolis in '84. "Some of the things happening in these other cities could be considered encouraging for us."

The high cost of racism and intolerance, especially when weighed against the human need for understanding and companionship, is at the heart of Monster's Ball, a brave, emotions-on-its-sleeve character drama featuring some of the year's strongest performances. Hank Gutowski (Billy Bob Thornton) is a second-generation prison guard who seems to have room for only two feelings: a keen sense of tradition and an overwhelming, blinding hatred of people whose skin is darker than his. Both of those traits he seems to have inherited from his father, Buck (Peter Boyle)
