Gov. Martin O'Malley and Rep. Joaquin Castro, a Texas congressman seen as a rising star in Democratic circles, will share a stage Thursday night at an annual fundraiser for Maryland's party faithful. O'Malley, term-limited and weighing a 2016 bid for president, will be the keynote speaker at the Maryland Democratic Party's fundraising gala in Prince George's County, the organization announced Monday. Castro, whose appearance was announced a month ago, will be the guest speaker.

"America the Beautiful" will be the theme for this year's observance of Veterans Day in Carroll County.The program includes flag posting, poetry readings by middle school pupils, a vocal solo and guest speaker, Ken Wayman, a retired Army captain. The Rev. Fred Eckhardt will offer a prayer. "This is a day set aside for all people across the United States to honor veterans, living and deceased, who served in all the wars," said Bob Edwards, a Navy veteran of the Korean War, who is organizing the event.

With stories about kids who pick their noses and jokes about Superman's funny clothes, guest speaker Aric Bostick charmed his audience at Wilde Lake Middle School yesterday. Speaking to sixth-graders and seventh-graders in a packed and rowdy auditorium, Bostick, 32, combined humor and personal stories with his message about how to succeed in life. "He was cool," seventh-grader Jazzman Otey, 11, said when it was over. "He was funny." Rae Diaz, 12, and also in seventh grade, said he was motivated to follow his dream of becoming a Major League shortstop or pitcher.

Defending CART/PPG Indy-car champion Al Unser Jr. headlines the Sports Car Club of America's 1991 National Convention, which begins here today.Headquartered at the Stouffer's Harborplace Hotel, representatives of the 54,000 members will take part in 40 seminars over three days. Everything from how to drive to regional road rally safety issues in SCCA racing will be discussed.The group also will hold a silent auction to support Maryland's Shock Trauma Research Fund.Unser will be the guest speaker at the Luncheon of Champions tomorrow.

Victoria Gastro Pub in Columbia presents monthly tasting dinners, often featuring pairings of micro breweries. But the Aug. 22 dinner features fresh and pickled vegetables, jams, compotes, and even pollen from Howard County farms. The dinners are held in the pub's Seven Sisters private dining room for about 40 guests, and the five-course dinners feature a guest speaker from the featured brewery or winery or another field expert. The main course is stout-braised beef short rib with cheddar mac & cheese and a green bean and bacon salad.

The Port Deposit Heritage Corporation held its 36th annual General Meeting on April 19 in the upstairs board room of the Paw Paw Building. President Judy Leonard opened the meeting and Patsy Grace submitted her Treasurer's Report. Arch McKown, curator of the Cecil County Historical Society, served as guest speaker, giving very useful information to the board regarding museum policies, plans and protocols. The Heritage has scheduled a fundraising bingo for August to help offset its operating costs.

The Northern Chesapeake West Point Society held its Annual Founders Day Celebration March 16 at the Maryland Golf and Country Clubs in Bel Air. More than 85 people representing graduates, cadets and parents of cadets, former professors and friends of the academy attended. The date marked the 210th anniversary of the founding of the United States Military Academy at West Point in New York; on March 16, 1802, Congress approved legislation establishing the academy. West Point is one of the oldest military academies in the world and is the oldest continuously run military post in America.

Notre Dame men's basketball coach Mike Brey will be the guest speaker at the Baltimore Catholic Leagu's 2nd Hall of Fame banquet, the league announced Thursday. Local broadcaster Keith Mills will be the emcee for the event, which will be held May 3 at the Rolling Road Country Club in Catonsville.  The 2012 induction class includes Tim Coles (Cardinal Gibbons, '82), Leon Dickerson (Cardinal Gibbons), Darryle Edwards (Calvert Hall, '81), Darnell Harris (St. Frances, '04) Phil Lane (Saint Maria Goretti, '96)
