Victoria Gastro Pub in Columbia presents monthly tasting dinners, often featuring pairings of micro breweries. But the Aug. 22 dinner features fresh and pickled vegetables, jams, compotes, and even pollen from Howard County farms. The dinners are held in the pub's Seven Sisters private dining room for about 40 guests, and the five-course dinners feature a guest speaker from the featured brewery or winery or another field expert. The main course is stout-braised beef short rib with cheddar mac & cheese and a green bean and bacon salad.

"America the Beautiful" will be the theme for this year's observance of Veterans Day in Carroll County.The program includes flag posting, poetry readings by middle school pupils, a vocal solo and guest speaker, Ken Wayman, a retired Army captain. The Rev. Fred Eckhardt will offer a prayer. "This is a day set aside for all people across the United States to honor veterans, living and deceased, who served in all the wars," said Bob Edwards, a Navy veteran of the Korean War, who is organizing the event.

With stories about kids who pick their noses and jokes about Superman's funny clothes, guest speaker Aric Bostick charmed his audience at Wilde Lake Middle School yesterday. Speaking to sixth-graders and seventh-graders in a packed and rowdy auditorium, Bostick, 32, combined humor and personal stories with his message about how to succeed in life. "He was cool," seventh-grader Jazzman Otey, 11, said when it was over. "He was funny." Rae Diaz, 12, and also in seventh grade, said he was motivated to follow his dream of becoming a Major League shortstop or pitcher.

The Port Deposit Heritage Corporation held its 36th annual General Meeting on April 19 in the upstairs board room of the Paw Paw Building. President Judy Leonard opened the meeting and Patsy Grace submitted her Treasurer's Report. Arch McKown, curator of the Cecil County Historical Society, served as guest speaker, giving very useful information to the board regarding museum policies, plans and protocols. The Heritage has scheduled a fundraising bingo for August to help offset its operating costs.

The Northern Chesapeake West Point Society held its Annual Founders Day Celebration March 16 at the Maryland Golf and Country Clubs in Bel Air. More than 85 people representing graduates, cadets and parents of cadets, former professors and friends of the academy attended. The date marked the 210th anniversary of the founding of the United States Military Academy at West Point in New York; on March 16, 1802, Congress approved legislation establishing the academy. West Point is one of the oldest military academies in the world and is the oldest continuously run military post in America.

Notre Dame men's basketball coach Mike Brey will be the guest speaker at the Baltimore Catholic Leagu's 2nd Hall of Fame banquet, the league announced Thursday.
