A scheduled 6:30 a.m. opening of the Curtis Bay drawbridge to allow for Coast Guard water traffic to pass beneath caused major traffic back-ups on Interstate 695 in both directions Friday morning. The drawbridge had closed by 6:59 a.m. and traffic was again flowing as of about 7:15 a.m., according to the Maryland Transportation Authority. However, there is a second scheduled opening of the drawbridge at 9:30 a.m., the authority said. An authority dispatcher said he could not estimate how long the second opening will last, because that depends on the type of watercraft moving through the span and water conditions at the time.

Zoe Stukenberg's versatile play in the midfield has been one of the keys to Marriott's Ridge's emergence as a girls lacrosse power. The senior helped the Mustangs win their first state title two years ago and had an All-Metro season last spring with 67 goals and 27 assists. Also a soccer and basketball player, Stukenberg led the No. 11 Mustangs to a 19-2 win over Atholton in Thursday's season opener. She scored four goals and added two assists. After years of playing with the M&D Lacrosse club, she now coaches and referees the sport for younger girls.

It stands to reason that every die-hard Maryland basketball fan of a certain age remembers where they were 10 years ago Friday. In the first game of their NCAA tournament title defense, the Terps trailed UNC-Wilmington 73-72 in a first-round game in Nashville. Senior guard Drew Nicholas took the inbounds pass, raced up the court and launched a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to give Maryland a 75-73 win. Does it really feel like that unforgettable NCAA tournament moment happened 10 years ago?

Alexander Moulton completed a four-year apprenticeship program last year to become a painter at the Coast Guard shipyard in Curtis Bay, following in the footsteps of his father, who said his son worked seven days a week to provide for two children. On Sunday night, the 29-year-old ate dinner with his parents and then headed off to a friend's house in Central Park Heights, where he was fatally shot inside a vehicle. His death was one of five being investigated by city homicide detectives over a 30-hour period in Baltimore.

If you first don't succeed, try again. And then, if needed, try yet again. The Edmondson boys basketball had the final possession at the end of regulation and again in the first overtime with the score tied against Oakdale, from Frederick County, but the No. 5 Red Storm was unable to convert the needed points that would send it to the Class 2A state title game. In the same spot in the second overtime, Edmondson senior guard Darius Walker changed the plan. Once again appearing to hold the ball for the final shot, Walker attacked the basket earlier than expected, hitting a running layup with 31 seconds left to give the Red Storm a two-point lead.
