Frank William Grunder, a retired Baltimore police lieutenant who ran the department's polygraph lab, died of kidney failure Saturday at Anne Arundel Medical Center. The Linthicum resident was 96, and the father of a slain city police sergeant. Born in Baltimore and raised on Fort Avenue, he graduated in 1926 from Calvert Hall College High School, where he played tennis and football. As a young man, Lieutenant Grunder rowed for the old Arundel Rowing Club in the Patapsco River and was an alternate for the 1932 Olympic games held in Los Angeles.

Northeast's 152-pound wrestler Al Grunder emerged as a champion in the Class 2A-1A Region III tournament's toughest weight class Saturdayat Howard County's Hammond High.The Eagles' other champion, No. 2-ranked Marty Kusick (103, 25-0-1), cruised to a 10-0 victory over Chopticon's defending regional champion Phillip Gainey. Kusick reachedthe title bout by pinning his 10th and 11th victims of the year.Grunder and Kusick were two of five state qualifiers for the Eagles, who finished third in the 15-team field, behind champion Oakland Mills (120 points)

Al Grunder wants to become the first Northeast wrestler to qualify for the state tournament in each of his four seasons on the varsity.But is he too late?Does anyone know for sure?Having researched the subject for nearly three years, Grunder believes he would become the first Eagle to accomplish the feat if he advances again this season. But his coach, Al Kohlhafer, who arrived at Northeast in 1969, says, "I have no idea whatsoever."I haven't thought about it at all. It's great for the kid -- it's super -- if it's true.

When a bubbling Linda Grunder burst onto the floor and did a little dance with her son, Al, after he'd won the state Class 2A-1A 160-pound championship, the celebration started in earnest for the surprising Northeast Eagles last night.The Eagles had won the state 2A-1A wrestling tournament in a breeze and ruined the party for pre-tournament favorites North Carroll and Francis Scott Key in their backyards at Western Maryland College.Northeast was never in trouble after the semifinals and posted 120 points.

Beth Grunder remembers Mom helping the kids steal some signs off of utility poles.It was the fall of 1983, the Baltimore Orioles had just won the World Series and the Grunders of Hamilton went out to cruise Waverly for souvenirs. That was the neighborhood the Birds called home back then."I think I was in the 6th grade and we stole some signs that said 'The Bird Will Fly' or something like that. My mom drove us to get them," says Grunder, who dishes coffee at the Daily Grind in Fells Point.

Danny DeVivo, the Mount St. Joseph 171-pounder who is ranked No. 1 in Maryland and was The Baltimore Sun's 1993-94 All-Metro Wrestler of the Year, was listed among the Super 25 seniors by USA Today last week.A two-time All-Metro, DeVivo won last year's National Prep Tournament at Lehigh. With last weekend's 10-0 victory over Bullis' fifth-ranked Eugene Brodetski in the title bout of the Annapolis Tournament, DeVivo improved his career record to 115-12.Brodetski, who was fourth in last year's National Prep Tournament, had lost only 12-7 to DeVivo in last year's National Prep quarterfinals.
