Yesterday in one sentence: The nation of Brazil let out the world's largest sigh of relief after a win in penalties against Chile, and Uruguay proved (wait for it) toothless in attack when held up against Colombia and its star forward James Rodriguez. What's on tap: Netherlands vs. Mexico, 12 p.m., ABC; Costa Rica vs. Greece, 4 p.m., ABC. What you'll see: If Saturday was decidedly South American, here's to a Sunday that is decidedly CONCACAF-y. Along with the United States, a record three teams from the North and Central American federation advanced to the knockout rounds, with Mexico and Costa Rica fighting to move on today.

Stopping sprawl needn't amount to a "war on rural Maryland," but pragmatic conservationists realize that rural residents need sustainable jobs if they hope to avoid endless battles over keeping farmland and forests from giving way to tract homes and strip malls. The Eastern Shore Land Conservancy is tackling that challenge Friday with an all-day " rural jobs summit " in Easton.  State and local officials, planners, farmers, business and community leaders have been invited to come discuss ways of preserving rural economies as well as land.

No two adaptations of "Moby-Dick" are the same, but it's doubtful that any previous rendition featured a synchronized-swimming skit to Rick James' song "Super Freak," a chance to win a Groupon to a local hair salon or a cameo by Esther Williams. This eclectic twist on Melville's classic whaling novel came courtesy of the Baltimore-based performance group Fluid Movement in its 12th annual Water Ballet Spectacular on Saturday afternoon at Druid Hill Park Pool before a crowd of about 400. The troupe will repeat the performance at 5 p.m. Sunday at Druid Hill Park Pool with encores on Aug. 3 and 4 at Patterson Park Pool.

It will be his hairiest role ever. As the lion in September Song's production of "The Wizard of Oz, " Chip Cotterman knows he will be hot, hot, hot. This past week, during a rehearsal at Winters Mill High School, he was already sweating without wearing his full costume. "I will be in an outfit that looks like your bathroom rug," Cotterman said, smiling. "It's always fun," said the veteran of several September Song's productions. "I've just been learning the whole time.
