A quality goal scorer can go a long way in soccer, helping cover up team mistakes while consistently exploiting opponents' miscues. At McDonogh this season, the No. 1 Eagles boys soccer team has two: junior Mike Gamble and senior Julian Griggs. With the home team being outplayed by No. 6 Loyola in the first 10 minutes and surrendering an early goal on Tuesday, Gamble and Griggs took over to lift the Eagles to a stunningly comfortable 6-1 win in Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association AConference play in Owings Mills.

Just when you thought he had disappeared, Gil Griggs surfaces again. The rascally Colt "Super Fan" of days gone by retired to Monkton and quietly opened a small auction house specializing in valuable documents. But Gil Griggs can't help but be in the middle of another story. He was minding his own business last month, the business of holding an auction. He had mailed out his "Signature House" catalog, which is stockpiled with Civil War documents, presidential notes and macabre fare: Letters from James Earl Ray, artwork by mass murderer John Wayne Gacy and more than two dozen letters, drawings and "comments" from Charles Manson, imprisoned for the 1969 murder of actress Sharon Tate and others.

The McDonogh boys soccer team spent the first half unsuccessfully trying to find the one crack in visiting Archbishop Curley's bunkered-down defense yesterday. The frustration ended just two minutes into the second half with sophomore forward Julian Griggs scoring his 16th goal of the season, enough for the No. 2 Eagles to claim a 1-0 win over the No. 3 Friars in Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference play in Owings Mills. Junior midfielder Mamadou Kansaye collected the ball on the left side, beat a defender to gain space and then lofted a left-footed cross to the middle for Griggs, whose perfectly placed header got past Curley senior goalkeeper Jon Connolly on his right side.
