Softball* 55-and over -- First place Danny's improved to 19-1 by defeating Ken Michael's (13-6) 11-7, 11-7 in Tuesday night league play.Ken Ryland went 3-for-3, with a homer and two RBI for the winners. Teammate Bill Lovelace went 2-for-3 with two RBI. In the second game, Jay Soloman was 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBI.Betty and Jake's is now in third place with 15-6, Spindler's is in fourth with a 11-9 record. Greyhounds (8-11), Arthur's (4-17), and Last Chance (0-20) represent the fifth, sixth, and seventh spots.

The Pistons won the Lake Shore Youth Basketball League 11-12 boys championship last week by defeating the Hornets in the final, 43-32.Joey Anarino helped the Pistons advance to the championship game by scoring 33 points in their 52-24 semifinal victory over the Pacers. Robert Jones was the second-leading scorer for the victors with eight points, followed by C. J. Robey and Matt Friedman with six each.Anarino scored a game-high 29 points in the championship and Robey added eight. Friedman forced three turnovers in the victory.

Anne Arundel Youth Soccer selects Sides for Sommer AwardRecipient chosen for his leadershipTerry L. Sides of Arnold has been chosen as the second recipient of the Joe Sommer Award presented by the Anne Arundel Youth Soccer League for outstanding leadership and dedication to the sport in Anne Arundel County.The award, named for former AAYSL president and Crofton resident Joe Sommer, will be presented to Sides on April 14 at the organization's regular monthly meeting at the Winterode Building in Crownsville.

The Linthicum-Ferndale Yellow Jackets 11-12 boys basketball team beat Lake Shore, 27-19, in the Anne Arundel Gridiron Rebels Sunday League matchup last weekend at North County High.The Yellow Jackets used a strong defense to take a 12-8 halftime lead and then used their transition game to extend the lead to 23-14 after three quarters.David Dolch led the Yellow Jackets with 14 points and Ryan George added seven. Adam Sutton chipped in three for the victors and Joe Anarino and Eric Larson contributed two points and one, respectively.

The Severna Park Green Hornets junior wrestling team captured seven individual titles at last weekend's Age-Weight Tournament at Francis Scott Key High School in Carroll County.Those claiming first place for the Green Hornets were Jake Boulay (55 pounds), Corey Bowers (45), Rob Pettit (70), Dan Fitzgerald (80), Mark Malone (85), Weaver McDaniel (90) and Trevor Needham (115).Tournament runners-up for Severna Park included Shaun Jones (65), Jeff Payne (75) and Matt Negrete (75). The Severna Park Green Hornets "A" team defeated the Anne Arundel Optimists, 31-16, in an 8-10 Danny Ferry League basketball game Saturday at Crofton Middle School.Richard Tuohey led the way for the Green Hornets with 10 points, and Jarrod Ross scored nine. Derek Dixon added five for the victors and Joe Burke, Gavin Floyd and Nick Richards chipped in two apiece.Jon Taylor added a foul shot for the Hornets, and Tuohey and Ross were the team's rebounding leaders.Earlier that day, Severna Park's "B" team defeated Maryland City, 18-8, to bring Severna Park's overall record to 36-3.

Severna Park youths in districtsFive Severna Park youths advanced to next month's District competition of the Elks' National Free Throw Contest last Saturday at Severna Park Elementary School.The three boys and two girls, who won their respective age classes, will compete at the District level in Essex in February, with the winners advancing to the state competition in Frederick. The nationals are set for April in Indianapolis.Ben Pellicani won the Severna Park Elks 8-9-year-old shoot with his brother, Nick Pellicani, taking the 10-11 and Chris Master winning the 12-13 bracket.

The Severna Park Green Hornets 8-10 county league team recently won two holiday basketball tournaments.In the championship game of the sixth-grade St. Jerome of Hyattsville Tournament, the Hornets trimmed St. Mark's, 43-40, with the help of four sixth-graders from last year's 8-10 Severna ,, Park squad.James Bowen led the winners with 14 points, going 7-for-7 from the field and collecting four rebounds. Derek Dixon and Richard Tuohey (five rebounds) added eight and six points, respectively.

The Gambrills-Odenton Recreation Council Wildcat overwhelmed Davidsonville, 30-7, in the nightcap of the Anne Arundel Youth Football Association championships Saturday at Anne Arundel Community College.The 140-pound county champions finished 11-0."We made it a little tough on ourselves in the first quarter," said coach Mike Vladich.GORC fell behind in the first quarter when Davidsonville quarterback Scott Fulton hit Josh White with a 30-yard touchdown pass.Fulton's one-point conversion pass to Brian Kilpatrick gave the Gators a 7-0 lead with 6:52 remaining in the first quarter.

Youth footballThe Brooklyn Park Broncos (3-5) rallied from a 6-0 first-half deficit to post a 25-6 victory over winless Maryland City (0-7) in county 115-pound football.Dominic Harris (9-for-47 rushing) got the Broncos going with a short touchdown run and later caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Cory Wright (4-for-6, 41 yards passing).Wright also ran back an interception 25 yards for a score, and Antoine Chambers (10-for-40 rushing) scored the other Broncos touchdown from 20 yards. The Broncos had just 17 yards total offense in the first half.
