An ailing West Baltimore woman sat huddled in a recliner yesterday to stave off city housing officials trying to dislodge her from the dilapidated rowhouse on West Pratt Street that she bought in 1970.Once a symbol of Marguerite Greaver's independence from low-income housing, the three-story rowhouse has a collapsing ceiling, holes in the walls, dirt floors and has been without heat for three years. The holes in the door and walls admit winter's chill -- and vagrants who Greaver said lived there while she was hospitalized this summer.

Marguerite Greaver has gotten a reprieve from having to move out of her West Pratt Street rowhouse -- at least for a while.A spokesman with the Housing Authority of Baltimore City said Friday that officials will let Greaver, 78, stay in the three-story house while they determine whether renovations can be safely made with her living in it.A decision probably won't be made until after Christmas, said spokesman John Milton Wesley. He said thousands of dollars have been raised for renovations to Greaver's home, which had a notice to vacate placed on it last month.

Marguerite Greaver's three-story rowhouse in the 1800 block of W. Pratt St. lacks heat, has faulty wiring and a hole in a first-floor wall. Just a few minor problems, she says.Major problems, says the city. So officials have given Greaver, 78, until Tuesday to fix up the place or move out. They know she suffers from cancer and has little money. The officials are trying to help her relocate.Greaver, who is a widow, doesn't want to move from the house where she has lived since 1970, and which she says is paid for."

Earl R. Greaver now lives in Albuquerque, N.M., after a long career in the Air Force. But the retired major grew up in the Riderwood-Ruxton-Bare Hills section of Baltimore County, once worked for Hutzler Brothers department store and has definite ideas about just what makes an old-fashioned Baltimorean.Somehow he got a copy of a Jan. 2 column, "Idiosyncracies that make a Baltimorean a Baltimorean." The memories apparently tumbled back and he wrote a long letter, telling of the Baltimore he once knew.

Aberdeen's inside strength proved to be too much for Kenwood's outside attack, as the visiting Eagles (21-4) went on to claim the Class 3A North region title with an 86-66 victory yesterday. The game was the first meeting between the two schools and it proved more suspenseful than the final 20-point margin would indicate. The situation became most worrisome for Aberdeen in the second quarter.E.J. Henderson, the heart of Aberdeen's strong inside game, had sat down after collecting three fouls in the first five minutes of play.
