Anne Arundel Community College is using a $140,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education in a three-year Talent Search program to increase participation of county low-income, first-generation and minority youth and young adults in higher education.The grant will help the county to meet state goals of lower dropout rates, improved school attendance and passing grades on mandatory state reading, math, writing and citizenship tests.Initiatives will include assisting middle and high school students to improve academic performance and standardized test scores.

Carroll commissioners agreed yesterday to apply for a grant to help pay for a new $10,600 cage for birds of prey at the Hashawha Environmental Center.The current cage is old and falling apart, county grants analyst Michille Hyde said.The county will apply for a $5,000 grant from the Phillips Environmental Partnership.The Hashawha Recreational Council will contribute $2,700, anthe Hashawha-Bear Branch Advisory Council will contribute $500, she said.The county will be asked to contribute $2,400, she said.

WASHINGTON -- An agency at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore that works to expand tourism and other industries has received a $120,000 grant from the Commerce Department to enlarge its work.The agency, the Rural Development Center, lends money to small businesses, trains entrepreneurs and works with county leaders to improve the Eastern Shore's economic climate.The development center "allows us to not only improve our outreach, it helps people find employment for so many unemployed on the Eastern Shore," university President William P. Hytche said Friday.
