Rose C. Ulman, a former bookkeeper and patron of the arts, died Monday of complications from a stroke at her Pikesville home. She was 97. Rose Clayman was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, and after graduating from high school worked as a bookkeeper for several companies there. During a vacation to Virginia Beach, Va., she met her future husband, Erwin Ira Ulman, a Baltimore lawyer. The couple married in 1938. A resident of Eleven Slade for 45 years, Mrs. Ulman returned to work during the 1970s as her husband's bookkeeper.

Seeta Khadan-Newton was doing everything she could to get her daughter and grandson back. She contacted city police reporting the pair missing in April 2006. When they were found living with a little known ministry in East Baltimore, she sued for custody of the infant. While that case languished in Circuit Court she begged for help. "Please," she said in handwritten letter to a Circuit Court judge, "my grandson is now 18 months old and I fear for his and my daughter's safety. You see they are in a cult.

Philip Tulkoff spent most of his career in engineering and computers. The food manufacturing business started by his Russian immigrant grandparents nearly 80 years ago had only been his high school summer job. So no one was more surprised than Tulkoff, 47, when he was asked three years ago to take over as chief executive of Baltimore-based Tulkoff Food Products Inc., best known for its horseradish and related products. "It totally came out of the blue," Tulkoff said. "I really had to learn everything."

SAM BAKER, longtime resident of Middle River, died on Monday, February 25, at Franklin Square Hospital at the age of 93. Sam took over the businesses of his father, Harry Baker in 1934. The businesses included a coal yard, a feed shed for fowl including chickens, ducks and turkeys, and a grocery store that sold dry goods like workman's gloves, pants, shirts and overalls. The store was licensed to sell distilled beverages. Sam was one of the students among 32 graduates of Kenwood High School in 1932.

Frederick M. Reinholdt Jr., a retired railroad administrator and sports enthusiast, died of pneumonia Thursday at the Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care. The Bird River-area resident was 82. Born in Baltimore and raised on Homestead Street in Waverly, he was the grandson of the operator of the old York Road tollhouse. Mr. Reinholdt attended City College and was a catcher in the old St. Bernard's Church Baseball League. He enlisted in the Army during World War II and served in the Ardennes region of Belgium and the Rhineland region of Germany.

Charles Leo "Lee" Chrest, a certified public accountant and founder of a Lutherville accounting firm, died Sunday of a massive heart attack at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. The Towson resident was 80. Mr. Chrest - the son and grandson of accountants - was born in Baltimore and raised in Catonsville. After graduating from Calvert Hall College High School in 1945, he enlisted in the Navy. Mr. Chrest, a communications technician, served at naval bases in the United States and Guam and was discharged in 1948.
