Charles M. Musgrove, 83, millwright, limousine driverCharles M. Musgrove, a spice company millwright who drove a funeral parlor limousine in his retirement, died Friday at Brightwood Nursing Center in Lutherville after a stroke. He was 83.Mr. Musgrove -- a lifelong resident of Chestnut Ridge, the high point between Green Spring and Worthington valleys -- worked at McCormick & Co. for 40 years, maintaining equipment at its old Light Street spice plant, before retiring in 1980.He took a part-time job with then-Lemmon-Mitchell-Wiedefeld funeral home, working until age 81.Raised on his parents' dairy farm, now the site of Chestnut Ridge Country Club, off Falls Road, he attended Towson High School.

Nyla Wright Woodside, a well-known local pianist and singer, died Thursday of complications of liver cancer at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson. She was 70.A Baltimore native, Mrs. Woodside graduated from Eastern High School in 1946 and attended the Peabody Conservatory to study voice, piano and opera. She graduated in 1949 with a teacher's certificate in voice.Her musical debut as a soprano, at a concert dedicating the band shell at Clifton Park in 1949, led to a series of radio programs and an invitation to be the soloist for the combined 70-piece No. 1 Park and Municipal Band's Independence Day program at the park in 1950.

Roland Louis Fox, a Homeland resident who cultivated Queen Elizabeth roses and made it a point to be the first usher to greet church members every Sunday, died of skin cancer Thursday at the Wesley Home. He was 94.Mr. Fox worked 51 years for the News American, where he was national advertising manager for three decades. He later became vice president and assistant to the publisher for TV Channels magazine.The Franklin High School graduate held the state's high school broad jump record in the 1920s and won the 100-yard dash championship three times.

WHEN Philadelphia architect Hensel Fink designed Grace United Methodist Church on Charles Street, his plans called for a large stained-glass window to be installed above the altar on the eastern end of the sanctuary.Although the church opened in 1951, the stained-glass window was not completed at that time. But the architect's vision for the altar was realized this year when Grace's congregation installed a stained-glass window in the spot reserved for it nearly 50 years ago.The window came from the former Wilson Memorial United Methodist Church at University Parkway and Charles Street, a building whose congregation was merged with Grace's in 1996.

Miriam M. Frisch, 91, homemaker and volunteerMiriam M. Frisch, a homemaker and volunteer, died Aug. 27 of congestive heart failure at Broadmead retirement community. She was 91.Mrs. Frisch was an accomplished pianist who enjoyed playing for family and friends.The former resident of Roland Park and Pinehurst moved to Broadmead in 1985, had been president of the Cedarcroft Garden Club, a member of the Woman's Club of Roland Park and served on the board of Grace United Methodist Church.She was a member of the auxiliary of the Johns Hopkins Hospital Woman's Board and was active in the Child Center, one of the earliest organizations in the city to deal with the needs of children.

Mary Gillespie Baker, a longtime member of the NAACP who was active in the civil rights organization's youth programs, died of cancer Jan. 26 at the Joseph Ritchie Hospice. She was 80 and lived in the Village of Cross Keys."She was a very warm and genuine person," said Virginia Richardson, a close friend. "She knew she was ill for a long time but just kept on going. I admired her for that."For nearly her entire life, Ms. Baker was a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Virginia HerspergerTaught LatinVirginia Rodgers Hersperger, a former teacher who was active in church and community work, died Saturday at Keswick of Alzheimer's disease. She was 88.While studying for a degree in education in the evening school at the Johns Hopkins University, Mrs. Hersperger taught Latin as a substitute teacher at Clifton Park Junior High School. After graduating in 1928, she was a full-time teacher at Clifton Park for about 10 years.She was a former president of the Woman's Club of Roland Park and of the Women's Society of Christian Service, now United Methodist Women, at Grace United Methodist Church.

Norman E. Keigler, who did not complete high school but became a certified public accountant and worked in the field for 55 years, died Saturday of a heart attack at St. Joseph Hospital. The longtime Wiltondale resident was 92.In 1991, he retired from his own firm. During his career, he called on customers in their offices and often refused payment from new clients until their businesses began to show a profit.Thomas Keigler of Baltimore, a grandson, said, "He took a great personal interest in his clients' firms and was now working in some cases with the second generation of his clients."

Lois M. Vogt, a retired office manager who was active in community and church affairs, died of cardiac arrest Thursday at her home in Towson.Mrs. Vogt, who was 73, worked 25 years for the Diffraction Co. of Sparks. She helped the company produce millions of hologram and diffraction disk designs, the reflective metal films used on stickers and credit cards.She managed the office through the company's expansion and relocation to an industrial park in Sparks until her retirement in 1992.Mrs.

Grace Schmidt Pierpont, a community volunteer active in hospital work, died in her sleep Monday at her daughter's home in Haemelschenburg, Germany. She was 90 and had lived in Homeland. Born Grace Schmidt in Owings Mills, she was a 1936 Franklin High School graduate and earned a nursing degree in 1941. A year later, she married Ross Z. Pierpont, a surgeon who was active in Republican politics. Mrs. Pierpont worked as a nurse for a decade until her daughter was born in 1951. She then did volunteer work for Roland Park Country School, Grace United Methodist Church, the Women's Auxiliary of Maryland General Hospital, the Baltimore Opera Guild, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the Golfer's Charitable Association, where she was chairwoman for many years.

Elizabeth "Betty Jane" Rice, a former model and longtime volunteer, died of pancreatic cancer March 19 at the Edenwald retirement community in Towson. She was 85. Elizabeth Shipley was born in Franklin, N.Y., and moved to Catonsville with her family. After graduating from Western High School in 1941, she went to work for the Army Corps of Engineers in Baltimore. Even though she was urged to pursue a fashion modeling career in New York City, Mrs. Rice remained in Baltimore, where she worked during the 1940s and 1950s as a model for Hutzler's department store.
