Brushing aside major objections from the community, Baltimore County officials have found little reason to hold back a so-called "megachurch" in Kingsville, a rural area of the county. The 42,000-square-foot worship center is planned by Grace Community Church.Community concerns about the impact of the proposed 500-seat church on traffic, wells and septic service have been adequately addressed, the Baltimore County Board of Appeals said yesterday. But the three-member panel gave opponents of the project a small, technical victory by agreeing that the case should go to the county Planning Board to determine whether it will have an adverse impact on a nearby historic building.

HOUSTON - While one investigation into the disintegration of space shuttle Columbia continued yesterday inside the Johnson Space Center, a separate reckoning began outside it. By the thousands, parishioners flocked to the mega-churches that blanket the Houston area, seeking explanations for the loss of seven astronauts they considered their neighbors, and for the setback to a cause they consider their calling. In vast halls with tall jagged spires as ubiquitous as oil derricks, they sang, cried and prayed as their ministers told them that the shuttle's demise was a confirmation of their faith.

Some rolled out borrowed cots and opened spare bedrooms, so that pilgrims from across the land might have a place to lay their heads. Others chartered dozens of buses, so that brothers could come to know each other -- even as they set out on a journey to understand themselves. With the Promise Keepers rally expected to draw hundreds of thousands of Christian men tomorrow in Washington, Baltimore-area churchgoers and religious leaders are putting the final touches on plans to get the faithful to the revival.

Kingsville residents will get a chance tonight to express their concerns about a church's plans to build a 42,000-square-foot worship center in their northeastern Baltimore County community -- a proposal that helped spur attempts to impose limits on the size of churches moving into rural areas.Officials in the Greater Kingsville Civic Association complain that the Grace Community Church's planned project would become a hulking landmark and place heavy demands on well water."It just boils down to the size," said Karen Stuebing, a member of the civic association board and former officer in the Gunpowder Valley Conservancy, an environmental group.

There are no crosses, no religious signs or symbols and no fancy furniture to decorate Grace Community Church in Columbia. The church meets in three large warehouse buildings in an industrial complex off Route 108. Instead of vestments, the pastor preaches in an open-neck sport shirt. Instead of a robed choir, the music is directed by upbeat song leaders with hand-held microphones, accompanied by a band with drums, electric guitars and keyboard. Instead of quietly sung hymns, worshipers stand and clap as they sing contemporary choruses that are projected on overhead screens.

Community leaders in Granite are bracing for a fight against a prospective neighbor they worry will drain their wells, clog the main road with thousands of cars and forever change a picturesque sanctuary of country life in Baltimore County. Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, one of Baltimore's most prominent congregations, has outgrown its 1,700-seat church at 1300 Druid Hill Ave., and plans to construct a $10 million building on Old Court Road near Dogwood Road. The structure would cover 2 acres, seat 3,000 worshippers and have 1,373 parking spaces.
