Annapolis Panthers1998 record: 8-3Coach: Stephanie RowlandTop players: Katie Hartman, Sr., A; Ashley Mays, Sr., D; Emily Childs, Sr., G; Beth Herman, Sr., D; Ellen Jewel, Sr., D; Kate Steinfeld, Sr., D; Kristen Vandriessche, Sr., A; Amanda Smear, Jr., MF.Outlook: The Panthers' typically explosive attack may take a back seat to defense this season. Last fall's defense returns intact. Rowland is switching to a man-to-man defense for quicker transition after playing zone in past years. Childs, in her fourth season, covers all the angles in goal and keeps the entire defense together with constant communication.

As our question of the month, we asked readers to submit Black History Month essays. Below are articles about Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and two lesser-known Marylanders who made significant contributions.MANY lawyers worked with the legendary Thurgood Marshall to overturn the Supreme Court's infamous separate but equal doctrine, which had permitted racial segregation in schools and public accommodations. But while most Marylanders are aware of Marshall's contribution, few recognize the name of his colleague, William I. Gosnell.

WHEN I WAS 17, my father gave me a copy of H. L. Mencken's book "Newspaper Days" for Christmas. I read it three times before New Year's Day and concluded that I wanted to spend the rest of my life in the city room of The Evening Sun, Mencken's paper. At 21, shortly after graduating from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, I went to the old Sun building, at Baltimore and Charles streets, to ask for my job. Running on an enormous amount of ill-founded confidence, I had no appointment, but I thought they would probably be expecting me.As I headed for the elevator, I was stopped by the formidable Miss "Bernie" Moorman who stood guard at the reception desk.

For the fifth-grade boys of Cub Scout Den 2, Pack 737 at the Norwood School in Bethesda, an overnight stay at the National Aquarium was, as their den leader Nanci Gosnell put it, "too cool to pass up." The 10 children arrived at the Inner Harbor attraction Friday afternoon, dined on lasagna and brownies, walked across the top of the shark tank, toured the rain forest exhibit after the aquarium had closed for the night, and camped out in sleeping bags next to the dolphins. But when they left Saturday morning to head home in two Cadillac Escalades parked spaces apart at the Landmark garage on Gay Street, the chaperons and children discovered that someone had broken out both vehicles' windows, ransacked the interiors and stolen an iPod and a GPS device.
