The search for St. Mary's goalkeeper of the future has centered on freshman Joey Casey. The Ellicott City native and Mount St. Joseph native made 15 saves in the Seahawks' 13-12 upset of No. 11 Roanoke Sunday. In doing so, Casey validated coach Chris Hasbrouck's decision to go with him rather than seniors Scott Marsh and Ben Wheeler and junior Zack Blewett. “Great to have,” Hasbrouck said of Casey, who is scheduled to make his second career start against No. 8 Dickinson Saturday.

Adam Borgogelli made 13 saves on 24 shots in Mount St. Mary's 12-11 upset of then-No. 17 Bucknell Sunday. So it would seem to make sense that the sophomore goalkeeper will get the nod against Delaware this Saturday, right? Not so fast, according to coach Tom Gravante. Borgogelli got the start against the Bison after beating out freshmen Will Rego and Frankie McCarthy and junior Chris Klaiber in daily evaluations last week, and Gravante liked the competition so much that he's instituting the same drills this week.

Mikey Meagher, Florida Senior , Liverpool, N.Y., goalie Last season's national Goalie of the Year kept the Gators in a difficult season opener by shutting out No. 5 North Carolina for the final 52 minutes of a 5-3 victory. Meagher made nine saves, including three in the second half, as the Gators rallied from a 3-1 deficit, the first time they have ever won a game they trailed at halftime. The victory also marked the first time the Gators, a final four team last spring, have beaten an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent.

UMBC will open the season this Saturday against Robert Morris with Adam Cohen resuming his role as the team's starting goalkeeper. The senior got the nod over sophomore Wes DiRito, and coach Don Zimmerman didn't disagree that Cohen's experience - which includes 23 starts over his first three years - may have given him an edge in the competition. “Adam ended the fall as our No. 1 guy and then coming back in the spring, both guys were competing and improving and challenging one another,” Zimmerman said Thursday morning.

Mount St. Mary's plans to start sophomore goalkeeper Adam Borgogelli in Sunday's home opener against No. 17 Bucknell. While acknowledging that the lopsided nature of Tuesday's 23-6 loss to No. 3 Maryland didn't give the coaching staff enough time to accurately evaluate freshman Will Rego in his first career start, coach Tom Gravante said he wants to see what Borgogelli can do when the Bison visit Waldron Family Stadium in Emmittsburg. “Adam was the starting goalie at the end of fall, and then when guys came back for the preseason, he kind of worked himself out, and Will and [freshman]

For four years, Mount St. Mary's relied on T.C. DiBartolo as its undisputed starting goalkeeper. Now after one season, the team could make a change in the net. Despite the return of junior Chris Klaiber, coach Tom Gravante said he isn't sure who will start in Saturday's scrimmage against Lehigh. “We are having issues,” he said. “Right now, the kid that looked to be the No. 1 goalie at the end of the fall season was [sophomore] Adam Borgogelli. He looked great this fall.

Kendall Kuntz Garrison Forest, goalie, senior As the Grizzlies crafted what team officials believe is the first perfect season in school history, Kuntz served as a shield in goal. "Playing this season just meant the world to me," said Kuntz, who was sidelined most of last year with a broken foot. "I've dedicated myself to field hockey since sixth grade, and to have to sit out last season with a fluke injury and not be able to help my teammates was hard. Now, to come back and for us to have a season like this is incredible.

The first time UMBC coach Pete Caringi saw Phil Saunders, the 12-year-old soccer player was losing. The coach was watching his son, whose team was in the process of dominating Saunders' squad. Caringi also remembers a recruiting pitch that day. "His dad comes up and [starts] telling me how good his son is, and I'm like, 'Yeah, yeah.' Meanwhile, as I was watching the game [Phil] was playing really, really well," Caringi said with a smile. "I kind of kept a mental note about it. " Last Saturday, nearly a decade after that first encounter, Saunders blocked two penalty kicks to help UMBC win the America East championship, 4-2 in a shootout.

Sixteen years ago, he cruised the streets near John Carroll and what was then Loyola College in a Nissan Sentra, a fresh and eager youth who was ready to play, ready to compete. Back then he was known as "The Hornet," not because of his hulking, quarterback-worthy 6-foot-2 stature, but because his prized Sentra was brown - a reference to the Brown Hornet superhero from the Fat Albert cartoons. After being named Major League Soccer Goalkeeper of the Year twice, an MLS All-Star six times and MLS Comeback Player of the Year, Zach Thornton has returned home to Loyola University as a men's volunteer assistant coach.
