Information: 410-313-5577. hclibrary.org. around town Sports camps : The River Hill Boosters will sponsor summer sports camps at River Hill High School in Clarksville. The camps are designed to help young athletes improve basic skills. Weekly camps begin June 15 and run 9 a.m. to noon or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. More than 20 camps will be offered this summer, including football, soccer, baseball, softball, tennis, lacrosse, field hockey, volleyball, basketball, cross county, track and field, cheerleading, weight training, wrestling and dance.

The Glenwood library, 2350 Route 97, Cooksville, will present "Wacky Wednesdays," a series of summer activities with books, crafts and discussions for youngsters ages 11 and older. "Stamping Up!" with stamping expert Kathy Bodine, is planned from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 3. Materials will be provided. Registration is to begin at the branch Wednesday. "Soap Making," a workshop on making soap and bath salts, is planned from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 10. Materials will be provided. Registration is to begin July 27. "Back to School Crafts," a workshop on making desk caddies and magazine files, decorating shoes or a bag, is to be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 17. Participants should take a canvas bag, shoestrings, or white canvas sneakers to decorate.

LAST WINTER at Glenwood Middle School, Carol Nieberline's seventh-grade exploratory class collected more than 13,000 books.On Feb. 11, the students presented them to the children at Harlem Park Elementary in Baltimore.The Glenwood exploratory class, consisting of members of the wind ensemble -- performed a concert at Harlem Park.Glenwood has continued its relationship with Harlem Park by establishing a pen-pal program, pairing sixth- , seventh- and eighth-graders with Harlem Park's third- , fourth- and fifth-grade students.

Five people were injured -- and four remained hospitalized yesterday -- after a Saturday morning accident between two minivans on Route 97 in Glenwood.Lawrence Pendelton of the 2000 block of Little Haven Court in Olney was driving his Plymouth minivan north on Route 97 between Roxbury Road and Jennings Chapel Road about 8 a.m. Saturday. He crossed the center line and hit a Mazda minivan driven by Andrew Hovanec of the 5200 block of Stone Mill Court in Sykesville, police said.Mr. Hovanec's wife, Linda, and two children, Brenda and Andrew, also were in the minivan when it was hit head-on, police said.

Howard County police arrested a 16-year-old yesterday and charged him in the shotgun death of a horse in Glenwood last week. The juvenile, whose name is being withheld because of his age, has been charged with destruction of property, animal cruelty and reckless endangerment. He was released to the custody of his parents, according to police spokeswoman Sherry Llewellyn. The investigation is ongoing. ... It appears there may be additional juvenile arrests involved at some point, she said.

A Baltimore County man was killed early yesterday when his car veered off Route 97 and slammed into a utility pole in Glenwood, Howard County police said.Bernard Abrams, 51, of the 3000 block of Katewood Court in Pikesville was pronounced dead at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he had been taken by a state police MedEvac helicopter.About 2 a.m., Mr. Abrams was driving his Pontiac Firebird south on Route 97, just south of MacClintock Drive. He lost control of the vehicle on a curve and crossed into the northbound lane, police said.

THE LIONS CLUB of Glenwood helps our community by raising money, donating it to local charities and organizations and having fun in the process.In the last fiscal year, the club gave more than $18,000 to groups, mostly in western Howard County. Among the recipients are the Boy Scout troops at Poplar Springs and West Friendship, girls baseball and basketball teams, the West County Senior Center, the Glenelg High School Band and several local 4-H clubs.In keeping with the tradition of Lions Club support for sight and hearing, the club gave more than $6,000 to Vision Assistance and Research.
